Most are used by connecting things that are happening during the testing to Cia's past. A quote reads, "Slashes of pink and purple light the sky as we approach the outskirts of town. Looking out I don't know what I'm looking at." The metaphor for this is how Cia is about to leave everything she has know and doesn't know what's in store for her in the future. The second quote reads, "As I look across the devastated city, I can't help but think, how did this happen?" The metaphor for this quote is how the testing ruins relationships formed by the candidates. The third quote reads, "I tell Tomas I'm going to look for a different way to get water. Then the world explodes." This shows just how far the testing officials are willing to go. The fourth quote reads, "We do things the five lakes way." The five lakes way refers to the way she was raised. It also shows how it's the only way she would be able to live with herself after the testing. The 5th quote reads, "I grab a shirt that will,cover the 5 long scars on my arm." This is a metaphor for how she will always be scarred form the testing. When a testing candidate gets to the car that takes them to the testing center, they are each given 2 bracelets. The bracelets have a design that is specific to each candidate. The bracelets also have little microphones in them so that the officials can listen in on them. A quote from the book reads, "Once he disappears into the skimmer, I study the bracelet. It is about an inch wide and woven with thick metal segments. I know the bracelet has a clasp, but the fastening is impossible to distinguish. Turning my wrist, I study the large silver disk attached to the top of the bracelet. Etched in black on the disk is an eight-pointed star. In the center of the star is a stylized lightning bolt" (Charbonneau 44). The lightning bolt is Cia's specific symbol.
Another motif that seemed to have a deeper meaning was Zandri's bracelet. She didn't want to go to the testing at all. Before Zandri left for the testing, she loved to draw art. Her family was also in charge of trying to engineer new flowing plants for the war torn lands. Her bracelet seemed to be made with special thought. A quote from the book reads, "On the other, smaller bracelet is a triangle with a stylized flower" (Charbonneau 306). This goes to show how the author used many motifs in her wrighting.

This list contains things that Cia has gone through throughout the book. However, these things are also apparent in the lives of students in the real world. For instance, usually during your teen years, you are going through most of the things that Cia is going through. Charbonneau does an amazing job at adding real life things into her book. When she puts in these details it allows the reader to feel a better connection to the character. Also, it helps the reader to empathize with the character. Overall, doing this adds a great effect to the book and makes it an all around better experience for the reader.
The picture chosen for element 3, shows a young girl, worrying about her school work. This relates to Cias situation very well. For instance, in the 1st round of testing, the candidates had to take crazy long tests about the subjects regular students have today.
