Written By: Harry B. Smith and Francis Wheeler (Lyrics)
Sung By:
Merle Travis; The Beatles; Lou Monte
This song is sung towards the beginning of the book, as Gatsby is reminiscing on Daisy and his romantic past. Back when Gatsby was in the army and first saw Daisy, he was poor and could not provide for her lavish lifestyle she desired. Later, when he had grown successful, he pursued her since now he had riches beyond measure.

"I'm the Sheik of Araby,
Your love belongs to me.
At night when you're asleep,
Into your tent I'll creep.
The stars that shine above
Will light our way to love.
You'll rule this land with me,
The Sheik of Araby."

The actual words of the song tell about an exotic man, and his lavish luxuries. Since he has all of this fame and fortune, he gets all that he wants. It also showcases Gatsby's class status, and his predominant role in society in the 1920s. This is sung during Gatsby's reminiscing to Nick about Daisy and their past, while they are in his mansion, because Nick is curious about their past and their long-going connection.

Written by: William Christopher Handy, Luther Henderson
Sung By: Marrion Harris
This song is mentioned in the book while Daisy is reminiscing about her childhood. In a way Fitzgerald is also foreshadowing Daisy's future, since the lyrics mention her wealth and lavish parties. Daisy actually grew up in the middle class in Kentucky. This song also points out as Gatsby is still an outsider in society. He did not grow up rich, but now he is rich, but still poor in personality.

"You'll see pretty browns in beautiful gowns,
You'll see tailor-mades and hand-me-downs,
You'll meet honest men, and pick-pockets skilled,
You'll find that business never ceases 'til somebody gets killed!"

The mood of this song is very uplifting, since it sounds as though the singer herself is living a luxurious life style. She makes it seem as though one must have riches in order to be happy, and in Daisy's case this is true. This song is sung to reminiscence about Daisy's past and how it affects her future with Gatsby.

Written by:Raymond B Egan, Gus Kahn, Richard A Whiting
Sung By: Various Artists
This song was sung by one of Gatsby's house guests as he is giving Daisy a tour around his mansion during his party. He is trying to pursue Daisy since they have a past, and this song ties directly to his feelings. This song makes the mood very light and flirty, since it is upbeat. Gatsby's main goal in life was to have Daisy under his arm, and this marked the beginning of their journey, since it was the beginning of their relationship.

"Night or daytime, it's all playtime
Ain't we got fun?
Hot or cold days, any old days
Ain't we got fun
If Wifey wishes
To go to a play
Don't wash the dishes
Just throw them away..."

The lyrics of this song are significant because no matter what the circumstances, Gatsby wants to be with Daisy. Which is ironic considering that Daisy did not want to be with him at first because he was poor. Overall, this song shares how Gatsby truly feels about Daisy and what he hopes for their future at the beginning of their relationship.

Introduction: Significance of Music in the Novel

The Great Gatsby is set in the 1920s during a period called the Jazz Age. WWI had just ended and Americans were trying to find things that brought them happiness in this hard time. Jazz became the center of every American's life, as it was a way to escape. Jazz was a new and exciting thing that everyone could listen to and enjoy. The role of jazz in The Great Gatsby can be seen through Gatsby's parties. As Gatsby hosted extravagant parties, jazz music was always being played in the background. It lightened the mood of the scene, and provided a memento for the characters. For example, whenever that specific song would play again, they would be reminded of an event that happened while that song was playing previously. Overall, jazz music provided a way of escape for Americans during the Jazz Age.

Written By: Shawn Carter, Evan Peter Mas
Sung By: Jay-Z
This song is most similar to the song "Beale Street Blues" in its reference to Gatsby's wealth and his place in society. This song is the genre hip-hop rap. Even in a part of the song he mentions Gatsby and his reputation as something to live up to. In correlation to the 1920s song, both mention how reputation is everything and that money is the only way to getting places.

"Stock markets just crash, now I'm just a bill
History don't repeat itself it rhymes, 1929 still
Write like Mark Twain, Jay Gatsby, I park things
Yellow cars, yellow gold like Slick Rick..."

This song may have a different mood and vibe, however the message is still the same. This song is used in The Great Gatsby soundtrack, and is played during Gatsby's extravagant party, which is only fitting. This modern song is the perfect description of Gatsby's lavish lifestyle and what he has to do to keep up his reputation.

Written By: Kamaal Ibn John Fareed
Sung By: Fergie
This is another song that played during a party scene in the movie The Great Gatsby. It is the most similar to the song "The Sheik of Araby", since both bask in the glory of having wealth, and being able to have whatever you want. This song is a mix of pop and hip-hop, and gives off a party mood. Back when Gatsby was not known for his wealth, he actaully had to work for everything, everyday.

"Make up your mind sweet baby, right here, right now’s all we got
A little party never killed nobody, so we gon’ dance until we drop
A little party never killed nobody, right here, right now’s all we got..."

Gatsby is taking advantage of all his money and running with it. However, if it came down to Daisy, he would do anything for her, no matter the circumstances. The similarities between these two songs are that they both talk about rich men, and partying all the time. Some differences are that they did not follow the same music genre, and put the listener in a different mood for the listener. Overall, these two songs go over how Gatsby used his wealth to his advantage.

Written By: Elizabeth Grant, Rick Nowels
Sung By: Lana Del Ray
The overall perfect idea of Daisy and Gatsby's relationship can be seen in this song. This song is most similar to "Ain't We Got Fun?", and was a pop song. As Gatsby reminiscences over his past life with Daisy, he remembers all the good times and hopes that their future with be together. This song in particular talks about all of their good times together, just like the other song from the 1920s.

"Hot summer nights, mid July
When you and I were forever wild
The crazy days, city lights
The way you'd play with me like a child..."

When Daisy and Gatsby were together, it was like no one else was there, and nothing else mattered. This song creates a very airy and light mood, in the movie especially when they played it in an scenes with Daisy and Gatsby. This song is the essence of their relationship, and all the good times they shared.
