5 Ways to Conduct Good Read Alouds for ELL Students

1. Reading at a steady pace (which can be slow depending on English proficiency) This is helpful to ELL students so they can follow what the teacher is reading and process the words and do not get confused with how fast the teacher may be reading.
2. Before reading the book the teacher should ask the students a few background questions. This is helpful because the teacher will be able to see what the students know and what they do not know.
3. Before reading the book the teacher should go over vocabulary that may be new to ELL students. This is helpful so that the students will know what is happening during the story and will not be confused when the teacher reads a word they do not know. This will help ELLs develop their vocabulary.

4. During the read aloud, the teacher can show the pictures to enhance the student’s understanding of the words. For more difficult words that are not explained by the pictures in the book, it would be best to provide a picture for the ELL student with the word next to it. 5.To make sure students understand what they are listening to, the teacher can ask questions during the book and after reading. By asking questions, the teacher is able to check for comprehension and to keep the students engaged.
