Also, like Elisha, get some clay test/samples made (e.g. little pinch pots or slab cylinders etc). We can fire them to their glaze temps for best raw colour and hardness result.

You've done a lot of work so far Sophie and its a great time now to capture and present all that work and process and inspirational media through your BOW proposal and Visual Art Diary. No need to re-invent the wheel just gather it all up and all the images and photos and sketches and scribblings.. etc. I'll guide you through if you need at any stage.

All your ideas have merit Sarah, but yes, we are all in a position of questioning what is possible/achievable/ appropriate now. I'm glad you are arriving at ideas you are content with, a place to start and you don't know exactly where it will lead but you'll enjoy making the work amongst the challenges thats important. I'm looking forward to seeing your updated BOW proposal with some of your inspirational images and more sketches, plus reading for comment.

* I have selected a few from the mid range firing type (1222 cone 6)

* And a few from earthenware range firing type (1100 cone 03)

* Keep in mind its this firing temperature that achieves the colour.

* Bisque temperatures always give a pale and unsaturated colour and more porous brittle body

Week 5 Instructions for Sophie: Vessels for surface experimentation

So you don't become too precious about the final surface of your major piece, it is important that you create a series of smaller vessels to explore your 2D painted experiments on.

Use these forms and this process to flesh out your ideas from 2d to 3d surface, and try to abandon the attachment you may feel regarding the 'getting it right'.

Just allow the process to be for the pure intention of building a form to practice on and enjoy the organic elements that may result.

You can use chalk to sketch out composition on them later.

I strongly recommend purchasing a heat gun if it is within your budget as it will free you up and give you much needed control in the drying. Sophie mentioned some very cheap ones from Bunnings.. $12 ish -
but you should check..
