What is the main point of this chapter?

The main point of this chapter is to dementrate how successful implementing Drama and Hip Hop in learning can be. With drama, we can have students play out roles that they may be facing and during role play they can learn what to and what not to do. With music students can share their stories and experiences in a form where they included their culture which makes it more comfortable for them.

“According to Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs, students need safety and belonging before they can successfully engage in problem solving and critical thinking.” p. 112 Artful Teaching. I found this very touching because as educators we don’t think about what may be the root of a problem when it comes to learning. Bullying for example as discussed in this chapter is not delt like it should in schools. I believe it is something that needs to be spoken about every single day to make sure the kids that are being bullied know someone at all times is looking out for them.

One experience that stood out for me was using drama in a bullying scene. A student acted like the bully and then roles switched and the bully was now the one being bullied. This gave other students watching to give there opinion on what they would do if they were in the situation. I thought this was a great excercise because being bullied is a very serious situation and one that may need often practice on how to deal with.

“ One of the best gift you can give your students and yourself is permission to make mistakes. Model it, rehearse it, and act on it.” p.121, Artful Teaching. My worries in this journey of being a future teacher are: will I be good, will my student succeed, will failure be my fault. I am learning with arts and implementing arts in any subject the artistic part of it has room for mostakes and improvements after if needed.

Why aren’t schools doing more to implement art? Why does it seem that schools are becoming more cookie cutter and no one is looking more outside the box and being more creative when it comes to education. I have done field observations and I hear teachers tell me that they can not teach the way they want, they have to follow a format and it seems to be directed to all students. So no student is challenged in a unique way everyone is treated pretty much the same but in reality no two students are totally alike. So I wonder can this be changed and can implementing art help in a positive way? I think it can and hopefully the school sistem will one day.

This chapter makes me think of what I would do as a teacher to make sure students feel safe and have confidence in knowing they belong in a positive way in the community or school environment they are in. I think though art is where you can get an idea of a students personality and maybe there worries and help students break though fears and help them become confident people!
