I spent 10 hours observing Bluestem Elementary Special Education Teacher Ms. Stacey Scribner. Bluestem is located in Leon, KS and has only once Special Education room and teacher in their school. The room doesn't have any kids that spend their whole day in there. The kids are all integrated into the classrooms as well as spend time in the Special Education room during certain times of the day.

Type of Special Needs Learners

Most kids in the class I was observing seemed to have some type of Intellectual Disability. Most struggled with Adaptive Behavior. There were some kids that "pulled out" (what this school calls when I kid needs extra help) for multiple subjects and some that just pulled out for math, science, social studies or English. One boy was Autistic, but very high functioning. There was a 5th grade girl who had lost her hearing. Watching the interaction between her and her teachers was such an amazing thing. I loved watching her with her peers and just how much they treated like one of their own. Both of my children have "pull outs". My son has a language disorder and goes to speech everyday. My daughter goes to the title 1 classroom everyday for math. I was not able to observe them recently, but I have in the past.

I was given the chance to sit down with Ms. Scribner in between some of her kids and ask some questions about her room and how things work. She works with 4th-6th grades and has special times set up for each grade level and each subject. Her room is full of vibrant colors and interesting things to help in the learning process. She takes each kids needs and individualizes her teaching to make sure it works for them. She always has 2 aids with her at any on time and sometimes even more. She co teaches with a 5th grade teacher, the title 1 teacher and herself everyday, a group of 4th graders that struggle with math. I watched her work with several different students and watched her understand what each student needed and provide it, she then cheered, physically got up and did a little cheer dance for the student. The positive atmosphere was infecting.

Effectivness of Teaching Strategy

This teacher is doing some amazing things with her kids. Every year they do a fundraiser to help the homeless shelter. They have a calendar and each day they must raise that amount of money. They count their money at school with her to help learn how to count money. At the end of the fundraiser they help make what they call "goody bags" to take to the homeless shelter. Below is a copy of the calendar so you can understand a little more what I mean. I thought this was super important and a wonderful to get the kids involved in class but also in the community.

This class also has a growing tower that self waters. They are growing lettuce, cilantro and spinach right now. When the cilantro is done they will make salsa as a class and sell it. She incorporates some much into the learning of her students it's amazing to watch them learn from her. Below is picture of their planter with lettuce fully grown. They actually ate salads the next day during class!

Ms. Scribner comes up with new and exciting things everyday to help her kids understand things they are having a hard time with and to incorporate different types of learning. She told me about the time they used hot dog ups as counters for math and when they were done they made croutons and ate them. She helps get kids excited about learning but at the same time she is teaching things about life.

Thoughts and Ideas about Teaching in a Classroom with Special Needs Students

I think it would be exciting. It would challenge me to come up with new ideas on how to teach things. After spending time with the students in Ms. Scribner's room and with Ms. Scribner and seeing how creative they all were and excited they all were, I can only hope that I can be half as amazing as her and those kids. This experience was amazing and something I will carry with me forever. My goal as a teacher is to inspire and guide young minds no matter the student. (This is the teacher I interviewed as well. I can't wait for you to see that project and see how truly special and amazing this woman really is!!!!!)
