Their claws allow them to grip to the tree without falling. Squirrels use their back claws to anchor to the tree while climbing down. Squirrels climb down trees head first, unlike many animals. Squirrels have very flexible ankle joints which allow them to turn their feet 180 degrees to anchor their claws into the tree. When squirrels rotate their feet 180 degrees, it looks like their feet are backwards. The first design was metal coming out of the boot in a hook shape, which would act as the anchor. The newest design is a removable sole that has metal on the bottom of the sole. The metal will still act as an anchor to the ground as the human goes up or down hills.
