Noam Rios
Topic/Theme: Thankfulness/Gratitude towards others and what we have
Explanation: In her poem, Natalie Patterson shows how grateful she is of everything, even the bad things in life, "because they teach her to count her blessings". In her poem, she doesn't directly say it, but she also teaches us how she doesn't need more than what she has, she has "gratitude that she has house keys in her hand", instead of wanting the keys to a penthouse. I love how she talks about relatable things, like texting your friends at 2 AM. Another thing I enjoyed was how she used music, it added a powerful punch and enhanced the meaning of the poem.

Rhea Phadke
Topic/Thematic Concept: The School System is outdated and needs to have changes.
Explanation: I really like this poem because Prince Ea uses great examples to rest his case. These examples are unique and I wouldn't have thought about them, but they're very clever. Prince Ea believes the school system needs to change and shows examples like how phones and cars have changed over the years but the school system hasn't. He was also respectful and very passionate about his topic which made me pay attention and want to listen to him. I also like how Prince Ea used important people's quotes that I know, like Albert Einstein to prove his point. He was very powerful when he told us that even the creator of standardized tests, Frederick J. Kelly, said that "These tests are too crude to be used."

Ava Cohen

Topic/theme- Being labeled something doesn't define what kind of person you are and what your future is going to be like
Explanation- I like this poem because it shows that even though people use labels to describe you, that doesn't decide what you do. Some examples I like are when he says "Labels are not you and labels are not me." This shows that you aren't what the label says you are . Something else I liked was how they said "... I was taught to be black." Because of stereotypes, people think that a certain race acts some way or does something a certain way, when that might not be true to you. This show that everyone is their own person and makes their own decision on what is best for them. I also liked how he included other people lip-reading what he is saying because they are all different ages, genders, and races. That makes it more powerful that being labeled can affect many people.

I feel that this is the main idea because of certain examples in the poem such as when she says " We are a symphony having a part to play." It shows that everyone has something they need to do to make harmony. She also talks about the fact that life can be confusinging and frustrating at times but we cannot give up and that even though we may have a tough time we must push through. I think that this is the reason the theme is about the diverse experiences and out roll in life.

First he shows how short of a time we have been on this planet by saying "If earth has been around for 24 hours, then we humans have only existed for the last 3 seconds." Then he rattles off various statistics about how we have negatively influenced nature and the planed. But they also lose themselves in the process. She would "shatter" her dignity and her pride just to have that person.
