"Then there’s the story of advertising. Public health advocates have long wondered when we might hit our “Joe Camel” moment when it comes to marketing fast food to kids. That is, when it might become, as happened with cigarettes, unacceptable (and, ultimately, illegal) to market fatty, sugary, calorie-laden foods and beverages to kids. Clearly, we’re a long way from that," (Best).

Decades ago cigarette commercials were seen playing such type of advertisements to children like fast food franchises in today’s standards to get their attention. People have wondered if such commercials directed at this young audience will someday be banned/illegal like in other countries.

And like most major companies, the fast-food giants appear to be shifting their marketing dollars to where young eyeballs are, developing kid-centric mobile apps and advertising on social media sites," (Best).

The advertisements that are put in the carton and children shows are to implant the idea of fast food at least a couple of times in their head every commercial break. Even placing ads to social media is so the user of the social media will have a higher chance of coming across an ad and have it rest in their mind for later or in the moment.

More troubling yet, the rate of children with severe obesity—roughly defined as a body mass index of 40 or above—appears to have increased nearly every year since 1999," (Best).

This shows an image for the reader instead of obesity getting worse or better it has only stayed at an almost steady point except for the severe obesity that has seen to keep rising over the past many years.

Obesity is more than just someone being overweight, and the food industry is helping this become worse in every individual that comes across these stores. Being obese has opened the doors to diseases and to lower life expectancy rates.

"Currently, more than 65% of Americans are overweight or obese. Obesity is correlated with several medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and certain types of cancer," (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).

Obesity is growing faster and faster throughout the year, and America is the "fattest" country in the world. The percentages for these diseases increase every year and open the door to so many others falling into the diseases of high blood pressure and cholesterol, leaving these individuals with health problems for the rest of their lives.

The industry really does have a say in what they advertise and how important they make each of their menu items. The industry has aided greatly in the obesity rates and the increasing rates that are rising every single year to excessive amounts.

"The food industry should help the consumer make healthy food choices. Food manufacturers are sensitive to consumer tastes and expectations. Industry should be committed to giving clear, consistent, and honest product claims, as well as working with retailers and restaurants to offer consumers relevant information about the products they purchase. Industry should promote nutrition education at all levels, from public schools to medical schools, and enhance nutrition awareness at the consumer level. Industry can create new products that meet individual nutritional needs, reformulate existing products to be healthier, and provide controlled portion sizes. In doing so, industry faces the challenge of satisfying consumer expectations for taste, quality, and price. The hope is that industry can develop healthier products by partnering with science-based communities and the government," (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).

This means that the food industry should keep the individual informed in any possible way about the true nutrition facts that are in their foods. This will help when people know about what they are eating, they may come more conscious.
