Temptation: completely fall back into the role of a traditional woman despite understanding and learning the principles of enlightenment at the time → might be powerless as she has no husband and had to return to her father + no financial foundation to support → hard for society to accept her as a new woman at the time so she can't just run away and live on her own

Stigma of her past relationship with the guy (scandal) → may deter others from helping.

What was the real reason they broke up

Financial reason added stresser but not root cause

The real reason: society not ready for modern relationship and their relationship is premised on a lot of misconceptions (she thought he loved her for her + this was her freedom but he liked her potential and he thought he wanted a modern woman but later realised he also wanted trad but he did not know how to reconcile these ideas)

Death → final freedom from expectations on her // rebellion against tradition → only way she can escape/resist it

Happiest ending she could have gotten given her position in society at the time

Review by Yin Nuo：

Firstly, you have responded to each of my questions, which is great. I think your group's discussion of the reasons for their breakup was very insightful. On the one hand, society is not prepared for modern relationships, which puts a lot of pressure on the couple to simply stay together. On the other hand, Juansheng himself has not actually realised what it means to be in a relationship, to live together, and what preparations have to be made. He also doesn't know if his love will change. Both perspectives are very important in understanding their breakup.

Another question to ponder is why Zijun was not the one who initiated the breakup first when she was also faced with such a situation？

Obstacles:

Tzu-chun would have felt a feeling of helplessness and fear for the future without Juan-sheng.

But for a single moment, she might see hope of a new life, without doing all the chores and bearing the boredom.

Ultimately, she may realized that she still need to return to her family

The real reason they broke up:

Our group believes the break up was largely on the fault of Juan-sheng, for if he did not confess his lost feelings,

Death:

We believe her death would have been a result of being unable to deal with her emotions and not knowing what to do without Juan-sheng. Having been dependent on Juan-sheng throughout the relationship, it would have put her in a position of discomfort and fear, which would have been difficult to overcome. Furthermore, the reality of her having to return to her family, her initial source of love that she gave up to pursue her relationship with Juian-sheng, would have been a difficult idea for her to overcome with her pride.

Our re-written version from Tzu-chun’s perspective:

Juansheng told me that he doesn't love me anymore this morning. Looking at him, I mumbled but no words could come out of my mouth.

All kinds of ideas circulated in my mind. I feel Juan-sheng’s words pierce my heart. I’m calmer than expected, as if I expected his words. The newfound freedom is sweet yet burdening, I'm on my own now. Looking around this shabby room, there is nothing except the man in front of me that holds the memory of all these years, not even a picture or a single piece of love letter.

There was nothing I could say for a forsaken relationship. To no longer be loved, was there anything I could say?

Then Juansheng looked at me for a second, or more, as if my face reminded him of the past. He left without another word. I looked around this home, once immersed in love and resonance, now seeming shabby, cold and empty. I suddenly felt a strong curb in my heart and confusion. When did everything start to change? Where is my future path? He used to be my teacher and guide for life, but now, while I struggled to keep the pace, he left decisively.

Review by Yin Nuo：

Thank you for both answering my question and making the rewrite, it was great! Your rewrites were also very vivid. The loss of dependence and not being loved is definitely one of the things that makes Zijun feel miserable. Something to think about is if just one failed relationship would have caused Zijun's death? Thinking about it in terms of society, the different ideas of the times, Zijun's personal thoughts, etc., could there be any deeper reason?

The feeling of hopelessness, living in the negative lights and criticism upon my prior choices made in life. I feel in love in yet another may fourth teen, thinking that my knowledge and mindset against feudalism would support my for love for him. But, we lost to the mundane way of living, and we failed to go against the world. He told me, he don't love me no more, and my love shattered. Ive lost every drop of my courag, and my life may be better off to its end.

Review by Yin Nuo：

Well done guys for trying to speculate and portraying Zijun's inner activities after the breakup. And this monologue points to the reason why she committed suicide, which was the loss of all courage. It might also be interesting to think about what else, besides "the mundane way of living", might have caused them to break up.
