Last year, BLM protests took over North America. The BLM movement is about racial injustices in our society. BLM protests against many problems like police brutality, racial profiling, and that the large majority of jails are occupied by African-Americans. In Canada, many of these happen for our indigenous people but what I want to focus on is their high incarceration rate.

Indigenous people occupy most of the cells in Canadian jails. They have the highest crime rate for any community in all of Canada. A third of Canadian jails are indigenous people. That’s extremely worrisome and surprising by itself. That should be enough information for there to be a big change. But what will show the importance of this problem, even more, is that they represent 4% of all Canadians. This means that every 4 in 100 people in Canada are indigenous and every 1 in 3 people in jail are also indigenous. They represent more than 50% of the population incarcerated in prisons in Alberta and 15% in Quebec which is the lowest in all of Canada. What’s even more troubling is that other populations have decreased by 10% since 2010 when the aboriginal population has increased by 44% of convictions. This is a major problem in Canada that needs to be stopped. This is because of the harsh conditions they live in, like extreme poverty, substance abuse, and racism. With all this in thought, they also represent 24% of victims of homicide in Canada. Every 9 in 100000 male natives are killed which is 6 times higher than the non-indigenous man. This number is continuously increasing every year since 2014.

This is a major problem that should be known nationwide. We need to spread awareness of this throughout Canada so our population knows this big problem that many of us are not informed about. Spreading awareness is the first step to solving this problem. There are many ways of spreading information, one of the most effective would be by using social media. Using this way is the best because it can reach a wider audience in less time. The next would be to say something when something happens, to stand up and have your voice be heard. Making your voice be heard is a critical factor in this battle. The louder you speak, the more pressure will be put on the government to make changes. If you would like to help, even more, there are a lot of charities helping the aboriginal communities. So if it would be in your interest to make a donation to a good cause it would make a big difference to moving forward.
