She is similar to them when she to travel to america for an opportunity, the came to america for an opportunity to get a job while Maria wants an opportunity to get an American education. In the barrio, the women stood so proudly to say how much she loved her homeland which was Puerto Rico.   Additionally, the text states “Stand up on the top states like poets inspired to recite verses to their native land.”   This shows that they were proud of it because they wanted to embrace their homeland and talk all about these positive things.  However,  Maria acts differently from them because she just sits and listens to them.   The text also states I listen, but do not speak.  I know that even though I am in their circle, I am not really a part of the powerful barrio women’s society yet.”This shows that even though she is in their circle which means that Maria can relate to them.  She is just 15 years old and she doesn’t have that type of voice.   Therefore this proves how Maria acts differently than them. 

Maria and the island women were all from Puerto Rico but they came to New York for different purposes.   The women came  for better opportunities and money.  According to the text it states "But someone always points out that beautiful scenery did not fill empty stomachs... No one disagrees with this opinion."   This shows that life was tough for the women. When she was in Puerto Rico, they are hungry. Maria came to New York for a different purpose was American education    According to the text it also states "My father missed the barrio of his younger days; he had to come home, and I wanted an American education."   This shows that Maria came for a different reason which was American education.   Because in Puerto Rico their education wasn't as great and also there wasn't technology.  Also her father came because he missed his barrio that he was born in.  Therefore, this shows the purposes of why Maria and theses people came to New York.
