MACBETH: I'm in. Now I will use all my strength to achieve this great and terrible thing. Go now, and deceive everyone with a show of friendliness. You must hide your traitorous heart behind a false face.
They exit.

COMMENT
Macbeth wishes that his wife would give birth to males. After having stained with blood the servants, who won't blame them for the crime? They both wonder what will happen in the future, when Macbeth kills his enemies.

If the assassination could trap the consequences, and catching with his successful execution to be the be-all and end-all!- but here, upon this bank and shoal of time, we'd jump the afterlife. But in these cases there are still judgements in this world - that we teach to commit violence, which will come back to plague us teachers. Justice, being equal to everyone, forces us to drink from the poisoned cup that we serve to others. He trusts me in two ways. First of all, I am his kinsman and his subject, so I should always try to protect him; then, as his host, I should be closing the door in his murderer’s face, not trying to murder him myself. Besides, Duncan has been such a humble leader, so free of corruption, that his virtuous will plead like angels, who were playing trumpets against the injustice of his murder. Pity, like an innocent newborn baby, will ride the wind with winged angels on invisible horses through the air to spread news of the horrible deed to everyone everywhere. People will shed a flood of tears that will drown the wind like a horrible downpour of rain. I can’t spur myself to action. The only thing motivating me is ambition, which makes people rush ahead of themselves toward disaster.

COMMENT:
Macbeth thinks about king Duncan assasination and he says that it should be done quickly, but he reflects also about the problems after it, because after a violent act there is always a consequence. Than he says also that he is his kinsman and subject and he shouldn't kill him but try to protect him, also because Duncan is a pretty good king.

The time and the place weren’t favourable and you wanted to make them so. Now they are favourable, but they are about to destroy you. I have suckled the baby and I know how sweet is to love him who drinks my milk. But while he was smiling at me I would have plucked my nipple out from his gums and smashed his brain out, if I had sworn as you did.
COMMENT
Macbeth told his wife that he is courageous but he doesn’t want to kill the king, he is afraid of daring more.
So lady Macbeth says that he is stubborn and tries to persuade him. She explains that if only he were be bold he would be successful.
The concept of man is different in macbeth and his wife:
Macbeth says a man is someone who doesn't dare to go beyond human limits;
Lady Macbeth says he would be much more a man if he did it.

LADY MACBETH: Will we fail? Be brave, and we'll not fail. When Duncan is asleep- he surely will be after the day's hard journey- I will get his chamberlains drunk so much that their memory will disappear like fume and their reason will be like limbeck. Then, when they will snore like pigs and sleep like they were dead, we will be able to do whatever we want to the unguarded Duncan. And what will stop us from blaming his drunken servants?

Macbeth is worried about a possible failure but a sadistic lady Macbeth tells him that if he was brave they would not fail. Moreover she explains the plan to kill king Duncan.

LADY: He has almost finished dinner. Why did you leave the dining room?
MACBETH: Has he asked for me?
LADY: Yes, don't you know he has?
MACBETH: We can’t go on with this plan. The king has honoured me, and I have earned the good opinion of everybody. I want to exploit these honours while the feeling is fresh and not throw them away so soon.
LADY: Were you drunk when you seemed so hopeful? Have you gone to sleep and woken up green and pale in fear of this idea? Now I know how much your love worth. Are you afraid to act the way you desire? Will you take the crown you want or will you live as a coward, always saying “I can’t” after you say “I want to”? You’re like the poor cat in the old story.

COMMENT

Lady Macbeth encourages his husband to fight to obtain the crown he wants. Macbeth, instead, wants to enjoy the honours that the king gave him and not to go on with his plan. But the Lady doesn't agree and she calls Macbeth coward. Lady Macbeth mentions an old story which is: all the cats love fish but they're afraid of getting wet.
This story to let him know she knows he desires but he's fearful.
