It was the systematic and state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews, along with millions of other victims, by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. 

The Holocaust was driven by Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime, which promoted a racist ideology centered on the concept of Aryan superiority. Hitler and his followers viewed Jews as an inferior race and blamed them for various societal problems, including Germany's defeat in World War I and economic difficulties.

The novel "Maus" by Art Spiegelman uses animals characters to depict the events of the Holocaust. Jews are portrayed as mice, Germans as cats, Poles as pigs, and so on. This stylistic choice helps to create a metaphorical distance while still conveying the gravity and horror of the Holocaust.
