To me this means that we should have an understanding of other nationalities and cultures. Not only is this of interest but it also allows us to take into account the views and opinions of others and make informed decisions.

A global citizen is someone who is both aware of the differences in beliefs and cultures that exist across the globe and takes these into consideration before acting. They understand that actions have consequences and how these consequences may be different across the world.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

The school puts an emphasis on International Science not only in Y12/13 but also at KS3 level. There is a real focus on some of the amazing projects and discoveries that have come about as a result of an international effort and also how the international science community has jumped to the aid of countries at times of crisis; as seen with the Ebola and Zika viruses. At KS3 level the idea of using SI units and chemical symbols in order to facilitate international cooperation is very prominent. The combination of this leads to students appreciating the importance and power of collaboration and also opens their eyes on a global scale.

How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

There are countless examples of times when international understanding has lead to great scientific success and on the flip-side, times when international misunderstanding has lead to disaster. A number of the scientific discoveries that we study during the course have been as a result of an international collaborative effort so it is a case of flagging up this fact to highlight its historic and continued significance.

We carried out research projects looking at a number of different genetic diseases. The students were encouraged to delve into the people responsible for researching the cause and (potential) cure for these diseases. This allowed them to understand that the research was often carried out across many different countries by people of all nationalities and the sharing of data allowed causes and cures to be found.
