This image is relevant because it represents the song as many US soldiers died overseas fighting in the war. In the Vietnam War, the US was telling the public that they were deescalating the war but in reality they were dragging on the war and continuing to fight which caused more casualties and more wounded soldiers. At the time, many new weapons of mass destruction were used such as agent orange and napalm that did severe damage to people and the surrounding environment which later prompted the ban of chemicals in warfare.

He didn't originally intend it to be protest music, he thought of it as "just another song".
Lyrics

Lyric #1:How many roads must a man walk down Before you call him a man?

This lyric questions if joining the military and fighting in the war is worth being recognized as a man at the time when joining the military showed pride and nationalism in your country. In the war, the soldiers had to face many adversities and put their life on the line to fight for the US which made them look masculine. Soldiers soon realized that the war was not going to end because the US was not doing everything in its power to end the war and to bring them home which made them lose their morale and drive to win the war.

Lyric #2:And how many deaths will it take 'till he knows
That too many people have died?

This lyric also questions how many people must die before the war will end. In Vietnam there were 10 of the Vietcong dying to 1 American. The thing here is that the US wasn't getting anywhere in the war and there were just thousands of people dying when they could simply end the war quicker or put effort to stop the killing of people. The US had no intentions in ending the war quickly but to keep dragging it on which caused more deaths in Vietnam. The public did not care of the 10 Vietnamese that were dying for every 1 American because in the end, an American is still dying overseas and there is no progess in resolving the conflict.

Lyric #3:"How many times must the cannon balls fly Before they're forever banned?"

The purpose if this lyric is to question if the type of weapons and gases they are using in Vietnam are justifiable for the damage they are doing to human lives and the surrounding land in Vietnam. During the war, the use of agent orange and other pesticides decimated the people of Vietnam and the rainforests to allow the US to see into the jungle, this lyric asks how long can the US keep causing harm to Vietnam before they stop (Banned).

Lyric #4:How many years must some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?

This lyric is questioning how long the war must take for the South Vietnamese can be free and without conflict. It took roughly 20 years for the fighting to stop even though the North ended up taking the victory and then taking South Vietnam. The US was not being transparent with their information to the public. The US was telling the public that they were getting out of the war and deescalating when in fact they didn't have any intention to leave or put all their power to ending the conflict. .

This song was written in 1962. This was in the middle of the Vietnam war. The song addresses social issues that were taking place during the Vietnam war. The song was primarily sang/played during protests that were Anti-Vietnam. The song which Bob Dylan said was "Not a protest song" brings light to many problems the US faces during the war with the lack of support in the later years of the war. The war also address the credibility of the US government as they question how long the war is going to last and if the government is actually fighting in the war.

The men in this photo are being evaluated for the draft, many Americans at the beginning of the war were very Pro-Vietnam and joining the military was a form of showing your manliness and pride for your Country. The song questions if fighting is the way to display masculinity and if the psychological tolls on the soldiers is justifiable for their duty serving their country.

This propaganda poster is to persuade others that the US should leave Vietnam and have peace. This is showing a dove on the poster and peace for life on earth. Doves are people that wanted a peaceful resolution to the war and and wanted to leave Vietnam. They had a more passive ideal vs Hawks who wanted to use force and violence to solve the problem while Doves wanted a peaceful resolution. The song was used in Anti-Vietnam protests and became very popular with doves.
