Another example of a challenge is protecting the evidence because of how difficult it can be to secure and know 100% that its safe. The fast changing and new developing technology can also pose an issue when investigating a case with digital evidence.

When Rader/BTK was dropping off a package that was meant for law enforcement, he a drop point near a store and the stores camera caught a blurry view of him making the drop and leaving in a black jeep Cherokee. The piece that actually got him caught was a 1.44 megabyte floppy disk that he sent to his local fox tv affiliate. He deleted information off of the floppy disk and it was metadata that was embedded into something that was deleted off of the disk so investigators looked into it and turned out to say the words Christ Lutheran church and said the last edits that were made were made by a man named Dennis.

It only took a total of nine days for the police to put the case fully together after getting the floppy disk. They figured out that Dennis was one of the council presidents at Lutheran Church. Also officers found a black Jeep Cherokee outside of Dennis's house which matched the video evidence from an earlier package drop off. But the evidence that the police had collected so far wasn't enough and it was only circumstantial. The police obtained a warrant to to a DNA test on one of his close relatives, (Dennis's daughter) she had PAP Smear done at Kansas states medical clinic. The DNA tests done matched the DNA under one of BTK's victims fingernails.

Over the last 30 years of new developing technology it has made a serious change in modern law enforcement. Digital evidence is definitely just one of things that is invaluable because of how much easier it makes it for detectives to do their jobs and how many cases where criminals would still be out there if it wasn't for digital evidence. Its value comes from the fact that Digital evidence makes it where agencies can increase case efficiency and it also makes it easier for cases to be closed. There would still be multiple murderers and other criminals big and small out there if it wasn't for digital evidence. Digital evidence has helped tremendously through out multiple cases over the years.
