He hadn’t wanted to tell his father about the funeral, but now it seemed the only way to calm him down.
Aaron Landau’s bulging, haunted eyes swept to his son. “A funeral? Who’s died? A passenger? It was the Nazis who did it! I knew they were on board! They’re after us all!” He began to thrash again, more panicked than before. 
“No, Papa, no!” Josef said. He fought to hold on to his father. “It was an old man. Professor Weiler. He was sick when he came aboard. It’s not the Nazis, Papa.” 
In this passage, Josef shows resilience by comforting his father, who is paranoid that the Nazis will recapture him aboard the MS St. Louis. Josef has to make the hard decision of what information to tell or to keep from his father. Josef has become the parent in this situation because his father was so traumatized by his experience with the Nazis.

She ran home again. Her father and grandfather were still arguing in the kitchen, so she slipped in the back way. She grabbed her trumpet, gave it one long, sad look, and ran out the back door. She was already in the street when she stopped, ran to her backyard, and snatched up the little mewling kitten too. With the trumpet in one arm and the kitten in the other, she ran the few clocks to the beach, where she banged on the door of a fisherman her grandfather knew. His gas-powered fishing boat rocked gently at a little pier nearby."
In this scene, Isabelle shows very early on her fast problem solving skills . This foreshadows her persistence and actions in the future, and her attitude toward conflict.
