"He tried stopping before, but it never lasted." "This time it will." "How do you know?" Its his present to me."

This quote shows the broken promises made by mainly Rex throughout the book. Jeannette's father was a drunk and didn't provide for his family as well as he thought. He kept saying that he was going to build a glass castle but never did. He tried to quit drinking a Jeanette's birthday present but failed. The story revolves around Rex breaking his promises. This picture shows how rex always choose alcohol over his kids and broke their hope.

“If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim”

This theme is important in the story because Rex and Rose Mary Walls neglected their children. They basically had to provide for themselves. They were not taken care of and often free to do whatever they please. This quote really shows how Jeannette and her siblings life was. If you don't want to die you better figure out how to survive, or get food. The children had to dig through trashcans at school to get even just one meal a day. They would collect bottles for recycling money, and at age babysit or find a job to get themselves something to eat. This picture shows a isolated child that symoblizes how the kids were on their own.

"I'm not upset because I'll miss you, Mom said. "I'm upset because you get to go to New York and I'm stuck here. It's not fair."

Jeannette's mother is the epitome of a narcissist. She always focuses on herself. She even puts herself above her own kids. Instead of being happy for Jeannette chasing her dreams and getting up and doing something for her life, her mom is upset that it is not her going and she is stuck in welch, hen she did in fact choose this lifestyle. Another example is when she hid a chocolate bar for herself while her kids were starving. The picture shows how Rose Mary focused on herself more than her four kids, with her art or her nutrition or stability.

"We told brian about our escape fund, and he pitched in, even though we hadn't included him in our plans because he was only in the seventh grade."

This quote represent coming of age because at a very young age the Walls children had to step up and take care of themselves. Jeannette learned to stove cook at age three, Lori graded papers for her mothers job. These kids came of age probably at the age of one. Brian worked very hard while going to school to help his sisters get out of welch, he believed in them, later on he became a police officer because his whole life he was protecting people, that is his identity. The picture represents brian, and him being a stand up guy, providing for his family and protecting his community was who he was.

“We laughed about all the kids who believed in the Santa Clause myth and got nothing but a bunch of cheap plastic toys. 'Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,' Dad said, ' you'll still have your stars.”

Although Rex struggled with addiction he still loved Jeannette. His neglectful lifestyle was different from the norm but he tried to give his mountain goat everything. Her dad didn't have money for presents but he gave her a better gift. The stars last forever and will be with her forever. Rex mainly towards the beginning of the book did things like this for his kids. He told Jeannette that what mattered was on the inside, apologized she could not take her whole rock collection, etc. Jeannette believed in him. The image represents a father and daughter relationship, Jeannette and her father's relationship was the strongest in the family, she believed in her dad when everyone else did not.

That was the thing about the hospital. You never had to worry about running out of stuff like food or ice or even chewing gum. I would have been happy staying in that hospital forever.

At the beginning of the book we see Jeanette in the hospital. She stays in their for 6 weeks due to burns. She loves it there because of the organization and cleanliness. It is a drastic change from her life at home and she loves it. The Walls family is always on the move, this kaotic system seems to work for a little bit but then they begin to settle in West Virginia, there it seems to get worse. The children long for order throughout the whole book. The image of a hospital shows the sense of order at a period of time in Jeannette's life
