WTO - World Trade Organisation by Neringa

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations.

The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.

The WTO is run by government members.

WTO Stand for:

Non-discrimination

A country should not discriminate between its trading partners, and it should not discriminate between its own and foreign products, services or nationals.

Opening trade

Lowering trade barriers is an obvious way to encourage trade; these barriers include customs duties (or tariffs) and measures such as import bans or quotas, that restrict quantities selectively.

Predictability and transparency

Foreign companies, investors and governments should be confident that trade barriers will not be raised arbitrarily. With stability and predictability, investment is encouraged, jobs are created and consumers can fully enjoy the benefits of competition – such as increased choice and lower prices.

Fair competition

Discouraging “unfair” practices, such as export subsidies and dumping products at below normal value to gain market share.

Support for less developed countries

The WTO agreements give them transition periods to adjust to WTO provisions and, in the case of the Trade Facilitation Agreement, provide for practical support for implementation of the Agreement.

Protection of the environment

The WTO agreements permit members to take measures to protect not only public, animal and plant health but also the environment. Members must not use environmental protection measures as a means of introducing discriminatory trade barriers.

Inclusion

The WTO seeks to build a more inclusive trading system that will allow more women and small businesses to participate in trade and to reap the economic benefits of global trading.

Partnerships

The WTO maintains regular dialogue with civil society, labour unions, universities and the business community to enhance cooperation and build partnerships.

Digital trade

The WTO recognizes the growing importance of e-commerce. Periodic reviews of the WTO’s work programme on e-commerce are conducted by the General Council based on reports from various WTO bodies.

It is accepted that domestic advertisements cannot be simply translated and then put in other countries and regions directly since cultural differences and misunderstandings are common in intercultural communication. Under the guidance of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory, this paper, taking McDonald’s advertisements as examples, aims at analyzing why does McDonald’s put different media advertisements in different countries and regions and how Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension assists the design of advertisements? With qualitative content analysis, we find that McDonald’s usually employs elements related to “we” such as family or friendship to design advertisements for cultures characterized by collectivism. Secondly, different dimensions would be elaborated in one advertisement at the same time. Besides, subcultural factors such as homosexuality or street dance are common in advertisements launched in feminine societies. Lastly, leisure time or entertainment is usually taken to design advertisements by McDonald’s for short-term orientated countries and regions.

‘Custom-configured’ model

This supply chain model is perfect for products where there is a requirement for potentially unlimited or multiple product configurations. This model has a high correlation between total cost and asset cost.

Product configuration takes place during the assembly process where the assembling is done as per the specifications of the customer. This supply chain model has a unique combination of the different processes of the agile supply chain model and the continuous-flow supply chain model.
