Marriage has been around for thousands of years, but weddings used to be intimate affairs, only involving small, simple gatherings with family. Fancy weddings didn’t become popular until Queen Victoria’s wedding in 1840, which popularized bridalwear and more elaborate ceremonies. Since the 1980s and 90s, the wedding industry has blown up thanks to movies and TV, turning weddings into huge events that can cost as much as payment for a house. Now, destination weddings and long day celebrations are common, and guests, especially young women, are expected to spend a lot on travel, outfits, parties, and gifts. There's also pressure to say yes to everything because of social expectations. With the current economy, many young people feel overwhelmed and are starting to get tired of how expensive and demanding weddings have become.
