Fact #1 - Zora Hurston was born in Eatonville , Florida . I found this piece of information in paragraph 2 of ' How it feels to be colored me .' Based off of my background knowledge of Eatonville , I can infer that Zora grew up in an all black community , which concludes that most of her writing is based on how she was taught in Eatonville . This fact influences her writing by expressing her background past in her writing , which is very inspiring. - Omar Gonzalez

Fact 1: Zora Hurtson's mom died when she was 9 years old. Her father remarried after her mom died. The relationship between her stepmother rapidly declined. She missed the warm and loving atmosphere that she had grown up in.

I can conclude that Zora grew up to be very independent with herself . Her lack of a good relationship with her father and stepmother never made her rely on them. So we could tell that Zora mostly did everything by herself without the help of others.

This fact would influence her writing because the atmosphere where you grow up shapes a person. Since she really didn't have the chance to grow up and be child she went straight to hustling. So all her life was just her being hardworking and showing the true realities.

https://www.notablebiographies.com/Ho-Jo/Hurston-Zora-Neale.html#:~:text=African%20American%20author%20and%20folklorist.%20Folklorist%20and%20novelist,charted%20a%20young%20African%20American%20woman%27s%20personal%20journey.

Pheoby is her bestfriend and even though she doesn't know anything about why she left, she isn't quick to judge like the others. Pheoby lets her have her secrets or doesn't question her because if Janie wanted Pheoby to know something she would speak up. Because of this quote we can tell what type of friend Pheoby is. She is the type of friend that has an open mind and is understanding.

Before this quote the townspeople criticize her for coming back to Eatonville alone. They judge her for a simple thing as having her hair down because at that time there were certain ways a woman of an older age would dress. A woman is held up to certain expectations and once they don't meet them, it causes
backlash and inappropriate assumptions.

Mrs. Sumpkins began to badmouth Jamie and was mad just because "she didn't stop and tell [her] all her business". This sheds light on the fact that although the people know nothing about Jamie, they still found things to hate about her through their jealousy.

"'Aw, Aw! Ah'm colored!'" "Us lived dere havin' fun till de chillum at school got to teasin' me 'bout livin' in de white folks' back-yard." Before this quote, Zora characterizes Janie as a playful child with white children in a white family. She evoked how clueless Janie was about seeing herself in a picture and how her cluelessness made "her" white family laugh. This picture depicts the smallest of details by showing that the family finds it funny that Janie has been confused her whole life as she believed she was "white" like them. Lastly, this proves the racial conflict Hurston provides to make the reader connect with the story.

In chapter 2, Janie's backstory was being told. When she was young, she was raised by her grandmother in a house out in the backyard of the white people she worked for. Janie said "Ah didn't know I wuzn't white till Ah was round six years old". Janie's unawareness of race lead her believe that she was the same as the white kids she played with. Reality hit hard at the age of 6 for Janie as she started to see differences in herself compared to others externally. After discovering she was colored, her life changed. She was treated differently in school and bullied because she was colored. This shows that equality back then did not exist due to the inferior belief white people had of colored people. People can be treated differently because of how the look and not who they are truly. Racism divides people, making the world unjust and biased.

As the season goes on, Nunkie grows bolder and bolder and is always falling over Tea Cake and playfully touching him. One day, Janie gets distracted and then finds that Nunkie and Tea Cake have disappeared. Their friend Sop-de-Bottom tells Janie that Nunkie and Tea Cake are over in a patch of cane. Janie rushes over and finds them play-wrestling on the ground. Tea Cake explains that Nunkie stole his work tickets and coquettishly [a woman who flirts, flirtingly] made him tussle [fight] for them. Nunkie flees, and when the couple returns home, Janie tries to beat Tea Cake. But he holds her off, and her wild anger transforms into wild passion. In bed the next morning, they both jok about what a foolish girl Nunkie is. (Chapter 15)

“The weight, the length, the glory was there.” Before this, Janie had always kept her hair because she was following Joe’s command about having her hair up. When Janie let her hair free, she was letting herself be free too. Janie was no longer restricted by a man’s word, she could finally do what she wanted.

“But she had been set in the market-place to sell.” After these words of comparing herself to a jewel that was sold off, Janie described herself as a jewel that tried to shine even after being beaten by life. The quote was telling us how Janie had given away her youth and shine at a very young age because others had forced her too, like vendors at a market selling off goods.

It was another day at the store for Janie. She was asked to cut a piece of tobacco but she could never cut it right with the knife. Joe was furious and corrected Janie in front of everyone. He said, "Don't stand dere rollin' yo' rump hangin nearly to yo' knees!". The wording gave off this type of criticism and superiority people used to believe in back then. Over time, it has become known as sexual objectification. While reprimanding her, Joe insulted her and stripped Janie of her title of woman. She was a mere worker for Joe at the store and Joe only liked her because of her looks. When Janie grew older, Joe saw the beauty he married change as time passed by. He no longer felt the same way and lost interest in her as a kid looses interest in a toy.

Janie was slapped by her husband, Joe. It wasn't the first time she felt out of love with Joe, but the fact that he hit her brought some sense into Janie's head. "She had an inside and an outside now and suddenly she knew how not to mix them." Now, Janie was finally able to differentiate Ms. Starks and Janie. Although they are the same person, different personas are shown to different people. She can be herself with her best friend Pheoby, and then be Ms. Starks to the rest of the town. The delusion of love had her going, but like all thigs, came to an end.

Janie was thinking back to her family and who she really was. Her grandmother and mother lingered in Janie's mind like the aftertaste of her sweetest memories. All her experiences were used to challenge Janie to see if she herself could be the one to free her. Then, it all came to her. "But she had been whipped like a cur dog, and run off down a back road after things." Those things she mentioned were experiences. Unpleasant ones at that. Also, Janie referring to herself as a cur dog was basically Janie calling herself an unattractive, good for nothing mutt. This was Janie thinking in the perspective other people; such as Joe, thought of her. She understood who she was to herself and who she was to others.
