I currently work at Ship Village Seafood Restaurant, located at Minyak Beku in Batu Pahat. It is also known as the “Ship Village Seafood Restaurant” in Batu Pahat, which is located in the coastal area adjacent to the sea and it has been operating for nearly 16 years. The hours of operation were start from 11am until 10.30pm (approximately 12 hours). Visitors can not only taste the fresh and delicious seafood, but also experience the village’s rural life and enjoy the cool sea breeze. Through the internship, I learnt the way to accept the customer’s order and recommend our restaurant’s main dishes for the customer. In order to avoid mistakes, the boss ask me to repeat all the foods and the drinks that had been ordered by the customer and always make sure all the food would be sent completely. Besides that, I will memorize the name of the food that appear on the menu when I have extra time because it would speed up in taking order and can answer the questions of our customer in time. In addition, Ship Village Seafood Restaurant also offer a wide variety of foods such as stir-fry dishes, Chinese food, vegetarian food, snacks and various seafood. Moreover, the appearance of the restaurant is also very unique. Its name is generally based on the house-based model, which attracts many customers from other places.

It won’t be very busy here because there aren’t too much customers except on Saturdays and Sundays. This is because Saturday and Sunday are public holidays, so there will be a lot of foreign tourists come here, of course the local people also will come here with their families to have a dinner and enjoy the beautiful sunset while blowing the sea breeze. However, working outside of public holidays is particularly leisurely because everyone is busy with their own work and does not want to drive too far from city to “Kampung” for enjoy the delicious food. So that’s why Saturday and Sunday are so busy. Although today is only the second day, I feel more comfortable here because the boss and other friend also take care of me and always talk to me. I took order as usual and handed out their dishes. I feel very lucky because the boss is nice and I am very happy to work at there. I asked my boss, “Did I need to wear a formal collar and slack?’’ He said “No need, just keep casual clothes such as T-shirt, shorts and slippers because here is a coastal zone, the climate will be quite hot, so simple clothes are more comfortable for me. However, I still decided to wear pants and wear a black hat to look more formal.

Many tourists and people come here for ascend the joss-stick worship and Chant Buddhist scripture. Because there is a very old temple here and is influenced by the local people’s respect and worship. So many older travellers come here to worship. Besides that, the people who live in the village are very enthusiastic to serve the traveller. Next, the traveller will having their dinner here after the worship and enjoy the famous seafood here. I worked as usual and became more experienced. For example, when the customer asks me to recommend the food, I recommend the main dishes of our restaurant and suggest “most people’s favorited” on the menu. Not only that, I also can explain the ingredient that have been use to prepare the food, so the customer can get a deeper understanding of the food that they want to eat if necessary. In addition, I can also accept order, quickly deliver dishes for customer and increase the sales of Ship Village Seafood Restaurant.

As a staff member of Ship Village Seafood Restaurant, I am responsible for taking care of the cleanliness of the welcoming for the next customer. Besides that, I clean all the tables and cutlery regularly by using a clean cloth and a suitable cleaning solution to ensure the cleanliness of the restaurant. Not only that, I also need to wash the glass, plate, fork, spoon and wipe clean it to make sure that have not any water droplets on its surface of plate and then place it back on the shelf. The glass also has to be turned down so that the water droplets will comes out slowly. After that, I work as usual order dishes, record on the paper, repeat the order to ensure their order correctly, pass the paper to the kitchen and talk to them about the order. Next, I will prepare the glass and ice for them and send their dishes based on the number of the table. I work as usual and try to do something new. I try to do my best as a waitress and enjoy my work. I cut the chili and put a little bit in the small plastic for the customer who need to take away. Besides that, I also have been asking to fill the sauce that made by the chef and put it in the small bottle such as Thai sauce, spicy sauce, sweet sauce and soy sauce. Next, I also have to cut some garlic and put it in a glasses because it is easy to fulfil requirements of the customer and they can choose based on their favourite. When the customer eating, I do not allow to sweep the floor because of the hygienic and I must wait until all the customer leave. So that, this way can let people feel they have been respected by us. Besides that, I only need to sweep the floor and do not need to mop because the floor of Sea Village Seafood Restaurant is made by wood because of that, If I use the water to mop the floor it will cause the wooden board will be corroded. Not only that, it will also cause an accident if the board broken immediately. Although the Sea Village Seafood Restaurant is at the rural area but I always ensure the cleanliness of the restaurant.  I am very happy because the boss gives me a chance to complete my SIEP here. For the guests who order the crab also do not need to worry about how to open the crab because the chef will cut for them and we also provide our guests with the crab pliers. So that, the guests also can have some fun to use the crab plier to open the crab by themselves even the chef have cut it but they still can enjoy the proses of break up the crab. Before when back i also sweep the floor.

As usual, I need to do start work preparation such as rows of chairs, filling the sauce, and sweep the floor. Then as usual, I still busy in take order, serve food and drink, cleaned up the table and other again and again. In addition, the Ship Village Seafood Restaurant also provided take away service for customer. This will provide convenience for some guests who are busy in their work, therefore they can take away the food and enjoy at very where. For example, the famous food that take away by the customer are “Asam fish, sambal sotong, salted crab, fried rich, fried noodles and so on.” When I am busy, I gradually forgot the time. The time is fast, it is time to close, I cleaned all the plate, glasses, spoons and forks, and then wiped with a dry cloth. After that, I sweep the floor, stack all the chair and make sure the restaurant environment is kept clean before leaving. I am very happy because I am able to finish my work today.

I work as usual, accept order, repeat order, served the food and beverage, cleaned up the table, wash the plate and glasses. In afternoon, I had learned to make some simple beverage like Chinese Tea, it is many type of herbal drinks that will be provided based on the favourite of the customer. I brew the tea under instruction of the assistance chef. 
  1. Prepare the tea set
  2. Pour the heated water over them to warm up the tea set
  3. Put 5-10 grams of tea leaves in the tea pot
  4. Add not quite boiling (80-90°) water
  5. Wait 3-5 minutes and then pour to serve the guest
I really enjoyed working while studying. Before when back, I sweep the floor to ensure restaurant environment in clean condition. Finally, I ended my work with a tired body.

Furthermore, I am very happy to be a member of the team and i will remember my life experience. Thank you, Ship Village Seafood Restaurant because I have the opportunity to learn a lot at here and I am very grateful. Before leaving, I thank the owners and all the staff for helping me in all aspects. Finally, I had a great experience as a waitress and ended my SIEP 1 at the Ship Village Seafood Restaurant.
