         <description><![CDATA[<p>Frederick Douglass fought against racism and was a runaway slave himself. In June, he wrote a book titled <em>The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave</em>, which outlined his life and depicted the horrors of slavery. The book became a bestseller. Douglass had to escape after essentially revealing his intentions to flee, so he went to Great Britain to spread his antislavery message. With Texas becoming a slave state, he advocated for further westward expansion.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>He boarded a train, disembarked, and proceeded to raid the United States armory in Harpers Ferry to arm enslaved people and spark a revolution. While he was inside the armory, the local militia and U.S. Marines surrounded the location. He sent his son outside to inform them that he was surrendering, but tragically, as soon as his son stepped out and announced their intention to drop the weapons and leave, he was shot and killed by the militia. Ultimately, John Brown was executed by hanging for his actions.</p>]]></description>
