Mr. Barclay was a very successful colonel and his home life was very good. However, that night he had gotten into a massive argument with his wife, Mrs. Barclay, and as the coachman burst through the door, it was revealed that he had been murdered. Mr. Barclay had been caught in an affair and his wife did not take too kindly to this. He was found in a pool of his own blood with a large wound on his head, presumably from the wooden club found next to him. His face was set in horror, as though he had seen his killer swing the club at him in a fit of rage. Despite all of this evidence, however, the details of his death were still disputed. Several witnesses were brought forward and footprints from a human and a mysterious animal were found. Later, with testimony from Mr. Henry Wood, we learn that the human footprints were his and the animal prints were those of his mongoose. Mr. Wood claimed that Barclay died of apoplexy, but most evidence pointed to Mrs. Barclay being the murderer, and little evidence showed signs of apoplexy. Coupled with Mr. Wood’s claims that Mrs. Barclay is innocent, Holmes uses a citation of David in the Bible to insinuate that Mr. Woods and Mrs. Barclay likely had an affair as well.

- The audience got to be the detective and try and connect evidence together as the story went along.
- The audience also got to learn detailed stories of the character's background story.
- The detail of the Mongoose in the case brought interest into the story.
- The details of the weapon. Specifically, that it was something that the deceased collected was interesting.
Dislikes:
- There were many witnesses and only one main suspect. The story mentioned many people involved in the crime and then never mentioned anything about them in the rest of the story. This made it easy to solve for the audience and lose some sort of focus when reading.
