A (brief) history of the origin of the boroughs

Roughly translated, a borough is basically: a city.
New york city is almost several cities in one.
The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhatten, Staten Island and Quenss are each a smaller government within the city's broader system of government. Each only has limited government powers. It has its own borough president and its very own culture and reputation. Each overlaps with a county of New York State and has its own disctrict attorney.

But how did these five boroughs come to be?

When the English seized control of the area and created the colony of New York they created the boroughs, but not the boroughs as we know them today. Their 1683 map includes the counties of New York (Manhattan), Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn) and Queens (Queens, of course).

As you might have noticed, The Bronx did not exist.
By the late 19th century the industrial elites who were trying to install utilities and move goods by railroad and harbor trough the area were starting to get a headache. What is now New York was then controlled by 40 seperate municipalities (gemeentes in Dutch). Lawyer and city planner Andrew Haswell Green argued for consolidation of the four counties into one massive city. He also proposed a annexation (which means: to join, to connect) a valuable chunk of the main land from Westchester County. This became The Bronx.

East of Brooklyn is Queens, the second largest borough in New York City on Long Island. It reaches the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the south, the Long Island Sound to the north, and the East River to the west.

It was named for the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza who was Queen of England in 1683. The English had taken possesion of the territory from the Dutch at this point in time.

Queens is a very diverse borough. Especially in terms of types of neighborhoods ranging from dense urban areas full of apartment buildings to lightly populated areas full of suburban singe-family homes.

The borough is home to two airports: JFK (Kennedy) and LaGuardia - as well as the New York Mets.
