In The Lottery the purpose of it was that every year there was a drawing where the man of the house hold picked a slip out of the black box. One slip out of all the slips had a black dot. Then everyone in that family had to pick a slip out. When that member of the family got the slip, they were stoned. They were stoned as a sacrifice. The town thought that if they sacrificed someone, they would have good crops.

In the Hunger Games they did the drawing in punishment for the uprising of their ancestors. Each of the twelve districts draw one boy's name and one girl's name to attend the Hunger Games. They drew the people to remind the districts of the Capitol's power and lack of remorse. Also, to remind them that they are powerless.

One difference between The Lottery and The Hunger Games is Katniss and Tessie. Tessie was willing to put her own daughter and son in law in the drawing, so the chances were lower. Although Katniss did the opposite, by sacrificing herself so that her sister didn't have to participate in the Hunger Games.

Another Difference between the stories is in the Lottery the drawing was not hated. It was just another day to them, they didn't want to stop it. Although in the Hunger Games, they didn't want to be picked and they didn't like the reaping day. They wish they could stop the day, although they aren't able to. In the Lottery it was accepted because they thought it would help their crops, but in the Hunger Games it was a punishment.
