The poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of "The Alchemist," a book we just recently read in this class. I feel a connection between these two because the dream drying up reminds me of Santiago and his many hardships while pursuing his personal legend. It seems that personal legends and dreams go hand in hand, and knowing how important these things were in the book "The Alchemist," it seems very similar. Throughout the book, Santiago had to be persuaded to follow his personal legend, then got robbed at the very start of his journey, and had to overcome countless challenges and obstacles to achieve it. Despite this, he never let his dream dry up and kept on following it.

The poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of personal legends in The Alchemist, specifically the crystal merchant compared to Santiago

I think that dreams become more or less appealing, based on who deferrers them

The crystal merchant puts off his dream of having a pilgrimage to Mecca, saying he avoids it to keep himself going, while Santiago reminisces about seeing the pyramids in Egypt every now and then while getting enough money working with the crystal merchant, he goes and completes his personal legend.

For some like the crystal merchant it sags like a heavy load

but for Santiago it explodes

"Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou In "Still I Rise," Angelou speaks about resilience and overcoming obstacles which parallels the struggles of the Younger family in Hansberry's play Personally I can relate to the poem's message of rising above challenges just like Beneatha and Walter Lee strive to overcome the obstacles in their lives Both works inspire me to persevere in pursuing my dreams despite the difficulties I may face. They remind me that, like the characters, I have the strength to rise and achieve my goals.

A memory I mostly remember in my life is when I had to goto the hospital for falling on the back of my head off the monkey bars in elementary

Something that’s happening a lot in my community is violence, there’s a lot of shootings and killings happening around and it’s dangerous for people around the community just trying to get home safe

The peom "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of the movie the “Green Book” because it says ‘what if a dream is differed?’ and it reminded me because in the movie, one of the main characters Dr. Donald Shirly, just wants one thing and its racial equity, and playing the piano, and it gets differed multiple times throughout the movie.

The poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of a memory when I had become unmotivated to do any work. I really wanted to get good grades especially in my math class, I worked hard on this test during my helping class and as well as during my lunch yet despite all my efforts I didn't understand. By the time when I had to turn it in my teacher had embarrassed me in front of the whole class, ridiculing me and making me feel very stupid for not understanding. After that incident I had stopped trying in my math class, I didn't feel that same motivation to continue on and eventually I just stopped giving it my all and didn't care about my grades anymore. It took until I got a D in my class when I realized I had to try again. Thankfully now despite my past struggles in math I have found myself trying again and studying, now I have better grades and better manage my time.

The poem ''Harlem'' by Langston Hughes reminds me of the time when I had a dream of becoming the best soccer player in the world, but then the big pandemic happened. Now that dream is just a memory in the past, I sometimes think of how it would have turned out if my parents would have kept taking to practice. Other times I'm also grateful that stuff happened how they did because I found a new passion that i want to pursue.

The poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of what is happening in my community right now with latino/hispanic families not having the right to live in the us anymore. The connection i see with these two ideas is that the poem describes the idea of dreams being crushed or set aside. Which is what is happening right now with the dreams others might have here in the united states all because they are being taken away and sent back as if they aren't welcomed here. By this it seems as if they're dreams don't matter which is why they are being set aside and can be referred as "drying up" just like the poem says.

The poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of the idea that if dreams are never realized, it can be harmful to the person. In "The Alchemist", if Santiago never pursued the treasure, he would've been living as a sheperd his whole life and never have realized his personal legend. That dream he had of some treasure in Egypt would have been stuck with him all his life, knowing that he could've went on a journey to discover himself and his own destiny. I think that's what it means by "stink like rotting meat".

The poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes reminds me of the Book "The Alchemist" because of the relation to personal legends and the fact that it was a very difficult journey to find his personal legend like him getting robbed in the very start of and all of the several hardships that Santiago had to face along the way like having to go through the middle of a entire war during his journey. But through all of these things Santiago never let his dream fade and or dry up and he kept on pursuing it until he eventually completed it.

The poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes heavily reminds me of what is happening in many communities with Immigrant parents, and the sad reality, One of the connections I see is that the poem describes what happens when dreams are put off or forgotten by a person. That’s exactly what happens to some immigrant parents who don’t have the money and time to reach the goals they dreamed of the goals they worked hard for and uprooted their entire lives for. It’s like the possibility for their dreams slowly becomes more and more unrealistic, and they have no choice but to give up and put their responsibilities first. This reminds me of the line “Or does it explode?” because the expectation of what America was supposed to be like isn’t near what it is, so being faced with reality and having to put your dreams aside to make a living, you end up wondering will your dreams dry up or wait for you to pursue it and when is it too late?
