Engaging the students at the initial talk part of the process by "shifting" from "learning content to problem solving".... it is interesting to think about learning this way. We are problem solvers as humans, but our students are so accustomed to being hand fed information that they stop being curious.

"When we scaffold language for ELs, we create a bridge between language and content. Teachers who expect ELs to learn grade-level content and master content-specific skills scaffold language to make this possible."

I great way to use authentic resources and support students learning and help them to make connections is to use multicultural books. Students love to listen to stories in which they can reflect on their own culture, beliefs and prior background.

How to Scaffold Language

Another wonderful article. With Beginnig Language Learners, developing vocabuary words is most important. I often utilize keywords with visuals on anchorchart paper. I also use repetition to develop failiarity with vocabulary words. However, I was reminded that incorporating homelanguage will assist in the process of content. With Developing Language Learners, I begin with sentence staters. I learned that language learners need more guidance in communicating sentences and extending texts. My students find it very helpful, when I provide them with sentence starters because it helps them get started with their ideas. A few of my students are just beginning to write their own sentences using the word wall and pictures that I provide for them. My big takeaway is that when we scaffold language for language learners, we create a bridge between language and content.
Marisol M.
