What is Netiquette?

Netiquette is a short term for network etiquette or Internet etiquette. Netiquette represents the importance of proper manners and behavior children and adults should use while chatting or being on social media. The importance of netiquette is to remember that at the other end of the connection or chat conversation is a person. Even though actions are made through a screen, there is a human being on the other side of it. It is crucial to know that once something has been posted, it is hard to take down. With the increased use of Internet in this digital age, netiquette can help one succeed not only in your education, but in your career and throughout life.

Watch Your Tone

One of the most important netiquettes is something that is also important in day to day life. Being aware of tone and context when posting online is something people so often forget. People are often so quick to fire back with their instant posts that they forget how it can be seen or understood from another perspective. Typing in all caps makes people feel like you are yelling. Not being aware of the context of your post or words can cause things you meant as harmless to be easily misconstrued. Another part of this netiquette is that kids nowadays are often not taught how to write a proper email even though that is one of the most common ways of communication nowadays.

This netiquette is very valuable to kids today because online presence is becoming more and more common in the academic and professional worlds. This means it is important to know how to leave a positive impression on anyone you are communicating with. This netiquette also seems extremely valuable because it a lesson that could benefit students in real life. These are common communication skills that students need to make it in the professional and academic world whether it be online or in person.

Students these days are using technology more and more, but because a lot of it is so new, people do not know how to properly educate students on some aspects of internet use. Teachers spend a lot of time focusing on internet safety and things like proper email format and tone of posts slip through the cracks. How to properly write formal online posts and how to interact in a professional capacity on the internet are things that will come in very handy for these students later on which is why it is so important to teach it to them young.

One way to teach students about this netiquette would be to provide them with a lesson on how to write a proper email. That is one of the most common ways of communication in a professional or educational environment nowadays which makes it more important than ever. Sending a poorly written email to a teacher or your boss can leave a bad taste in peoples mouths about not only your netiquette, but you in general. The proper writing of professional emails is a skill that will be relevant for a very long time and will greatly impact a students future communications.

Remember the Human

With this new age of technology, more people are using it. It completely surrounds us and we use it in our every day lives. Many people prefer to talk online because there is not much interaction involved. Instead of talking to someone face-to-face, you can hide behind a screen. Because of this, problems can occur. It is hard to remember that on the other side of the conversation is a person too.

This type of netiquette is important because it emphasizes the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule is simple; treat others the way you want to be treated. Online it is very easy to make hurtful comments because you can't see the other person's reaction. You don't know if the person receiving the comments is sensitive or emotional to what you may be saying. Also, some people prefer to go online as "anonymous", so they don't want others knowing who is leaving those cruel words.

In today's society, some children know how to work the Internet better than their own parents! These children are completely immersed in technology because they experience it everyday in their classrooms. Each year, classroom are getting computers, laptops and even Smart Boards installed. Lesson plans now involve this new technology and students can even take the laptops home with them. Although the increase of technology can seem like a positive way to learn, there is a negative side to it. Due to the increase of technology, there is also an increase of cyber bullying. We chose this netiquette because cyber bullying is so common among students that it has become a serious matter. Many students get teased or made fun of on the Internet as a daily occurrence. It is important to teach students the correct way to use the Internet. Students should understand to respect others and know that actions do have consequences.

Make Yourself Look Good Online

Being on social media or writing an email are easy things to do. However, many people abuse their power while being online. Sometimes people get too carried away with posting pictures or comments, that they forget what's appropriate and what's not. It's nice to share pictures and posts, but keep in mind who can see them. Sometimes colleges or employers can see what you post online and will judge you if you make a bad impression. So make the right decision and post appropriate things that will only make yourself look good. Before you post something ask yourself, "would you want your grandma to see this".

Sometimes while being online, we forget to be courteous to other users. Being behind the screen gives us the power to say whatever we want without physically seeing the other person's response. With that said, we should still respect other people's opinions. If you don't like someone's picture or post, don't write mean things on it. It is so easy to be misinterpreted online. One major thing to stay away from is using offensive language online. Don't use inappropriate words or curses. People will not only get hurt by that, but you're setting yourself up as a bad example to others. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

One easy mistake people make online all the time is spelling. Whether it is writing a caption for a picture or writing an email, spelling mistakes happen everywhere. Everyone makes these simple mistakes, however there are certain situations where you definitely don't want to. If you are applying for a new job or to a new school, it is crucial to double check what you are typing. Sometimes we don't even realize that we hit the wrong button while typing, but silly mistakes do happen. If you don't correct the spelling error and someone reading your work does, they may think you're lazy for not double checking. Another mistake people also make is grammar. Grammar is important and can be easily messed up. Make sure to have your spelling and grammar correct when emailing someone, especially a teacher or professor! We chose this netiquette because it is important to know what's the right thing to post and what's the wrong thing to post. Not only will it benefit children, students and adults, but it will benefit everyone around them. This netiquette should be taken seriously for students entering college or looking for a job because what they post could determine if they get in or not.

One way to teach students about this netiquette would be to create a lesson plan where students decide whether this post or picture would be appropriate to put online. Another activity could be how to be respectful on social media; create a chart with "do's and dont's" on how one should behave. Also, we could write emails with misspelled words and wrong grammar, so the students could fix the mistakes.

Take the High Road

One of the major benefits to the internet, and more specifically social media, is that it is instant. You can communicate with people around the world in seconds which in many cases can be considered an extreme positive. However, with that comes downsides as well. Some people can find themselves so caught up in the moment and the conversation that they say things they don't mean to. Whether it be excessive bragging or a rude comment, posting without thinking it through before can cause a huge problem.

Being aware of what you post and taking the high road is extremely important. What people often forget is that whatever you post on the internet is permanent. It may have only taken you three seconds to think about it, type it and send it, but like it or not it is there forever and can have a lasting impact on you and those around you.

It is so important that students are taught this before they spend too much time on the internet. If students get on and are given free range of posting whatever and wherever they want, they need to have the basic foundational knowledge that can keep them doing it safely and nicely. If a student is not made aware of how long lasting their internet presence is or how important it is to think a post through before posting it, they might make some mistakes that could be detrimental to them and others on the internet as well. If students are given examples of bad internet posts that were not thought through like posts that are clearly just bragging or rude, they might not make the same mistakes and will have a better chance at using the internet and technology for good.
