- We expect students to learn material without asking them to do much of anything with that material
- Material is often delivered in a basic way such as a PowerPoint where students copy down what is on each slide
- Then students regurgitate that material on worksheets and eventually on tests
- Tests often only include basic recalling questions (low on Bloom’s taxonomy)
- Standards rarely ask students to memorize terms, but rather to analyze concepts to form analysis rooted in evidence
- This does not set up students to learn the material

This podcast was very useful as Jennifer pointed out a significant problem in many teacher's instructional methods regardless of the grade level they teach or the experience they have. Jennifer was knowledgeable in all facets of this issue as she not only identified the problem, but also where this problem comes from. From this, she provided a thorough explanation of ten different activities that teachers of all grades could incorporate in between the direct instruction and assessment step of their instruction allowing students to actually engage in the content.

The information I learned in this podcast can help me, especially as a young educator, in recognizing the deficiencies in my daily lessons and instruction. By understanding my instructional deficiencies and what they might stem from, I am able to utilize and incorporate Jennifer's activity suggestions to improve my daily instruction. Because the problem Jennifer outlined can affect any educator, this podcast can be useful to educators of all grade levels and experience levels in recognizing the weaknesses in their instruction. As we prepare our lessons and daily activities it is important we remember to ask ourselves, "Are students doing anything with the material or are they just taking it in and putting it back out?" If we can remember to ask ourselves this each day and incorporate many of the solution activities Jennifer proposed, then we will be able to actively engage our students in the content. Through this active engagement our students are more likely to achieve the positive learning outcomes we desire.

Here is the link to Jennifer's Cult of Pedagogy website that contains blogs and numerous videos that can improve your instruction regardless of grade level or teaching experience.
https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/start-here/
