Local authorities split into two tiers, one being County Council, and the other being District, Borough or City Councils.
County Councils are responsible for education, transport, housing and planning, fire and public safety, a range of uniformed public services, waste management and many more.
District, Borough or city councils are responsible for much smaller areas . They also are responsible for rubbish collections, recycling, council tax collections, housing, and planning applications.
There is also a Parish Council, which is a single village or a part of a town, a parish council is very small. however it is in charge of things like street lights, so making sure they work, and if not getting them repaired, Local transport and Traffic services, so making sure all traffic lights are working, allotments, making sure they're rented out and tidy. Cemeteries, keeping them tidy and respectful, and the same with war memorials. Seating and shelters, putting shelters over bus stops and Making sure 'RIGHTS OF WAY' are clearly seen so there are no incidents.
There is also the Metropolitan District which mainly overlaps most of what the other councils do, and also the Unitary Authorities which overlaps too. However they are in control of things like trading standards, Emergency Planning and social services.

-Belle
