Militarism is a policy of enormous military power and keeping a standing army always prepared for war. It's for better interests.

WWI: Germany, Austria-Hungary, France, Russia, and Great Britain, the five major economic powers. Also, The clearest and most direct example of militarism in world war 1 is the Kingdom of Romania having an army of 500,000 soldiers. So an kingdom of that size created a 500,000 man army for no actual gain, so... yeah.

WWII: Militarism happened in Japan, as military leaders gained support and took over Japan. Then Japan's militarists used that to make the emperor superior to be made as a symbol of state power.

Archduke Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, had been assassinated on his visit to Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, who was a Serbian and a member of the Black Hand. The Black Hand was a society determined to free Bosnia from Austrian rule. Austria used the murder as justification to punish Serbia, so Austria gave Serbia a list of demands that, if not met, would result in serious consequences. Serbian leaders cooperated with most of Austria's demands, but suggested settling some of the demands with an international conference. Austria rejected this offer and declared war on Serbia. Russia, Serbia's ally, sent troops to the borders of Germany and Austria. Germany saw this as an act of war and declared war on Russia and France two days after. This resulted in Great Britain declaring war on Germany.

Germany's invasion of Poland:
The soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin, had signed a ten year non-aggression pact with Hitler. Within a secret part of this pact, Germany and the Soviet Union had agreed to divide Poland between them. Hitler launched a surprise attack on Poland on September 9,1939. German tanks and troop trucks began to enter Poland as German artillery and air crafts bombed Poland's capital, Warsaw. The Germans used a new military strategy called blitzkrieg, or lighting war to overwhelm Poland. On September 3, Britain and France declared war on Germany but by that time Poland had already fell and Germany had annexed the western half of it.

Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor:
Americans were aware that Japan was planning to go to Southeast Asia in order to collect resources to fuel Japan's fight with China. This threatened the American-controlled Philippine Islands and Guam. To halt Japan's advances, America sent aid to China and stopped oil shipments to Japan. Isoroku Yamamoto, Japan's naval strategist, saw the U.S fleet in Hawaii as a threat and called an attack on it. In the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, this resulted in the destruction of 19 ships and the death of over 2,300 Americans and left about 1,100 wounded. This tragedy had stunned and angered the American people. President Roosevelt had declared that December 7, 1941, would be a date of infamy.

In this type of warfare, soldiers directly fought in the trenches, and sadly, this was pitiful for small land gains, only to trade that for huge losses of human life. Life in the trenches was horrible, as a soldier mentioned that mud, mud, and mud is all you thought and ate about! It was unbreathable and bloodier than anything.

It affected millions of people and became total war. The war took control over the economy and governments controlled what factories produced and the amount. New diseases were able to spread throughout countries running rampant throughout the world such as the Spanish Flu. People were forced to start using rations and unemployment went down massively. Rationing was used for many things such as shoes and material to food. Propaganda started to circulate and news was forcibly censored at times in order to keep morale up. (People bedridden due to the Spanish Flu).

Total War was countries using every possible resource that they had in the war effort. Countries such as Britain, Germany, Austria, Russia, and France. What allowed allies to win both wars were having fresh soldiers and being able to outlast enemy soldiers who had been exhausted and lacking of resources. Supplies were vital, and when they ran out the only option for the nation being affected by it would have is to retreat.
Women were able to gain more freedoms because of their participation in the war. Men were able to see how women could do much more and what they were capable of. Some of the freedoms that they gained were abandoning restricted clothes and hairstyles, wore makeup, smoked, drank, and were able to drive cars in public. New careers for women also arose in professions such as journalism, medicine, and education. (Image of medical supplies being dropped off).

Literally 20 million people died from the disease worldwide. The influenza killed soldiers and civilians. In Berlin, on just one day in October, 1,500 people died. This happened in around summer of 1918, which threatened entire populations of both sides of the Great war. It spreaded everywhere, including, but not limited to the U.S. Russia, Asia, Europe, and it hit in England and India in May. Even with that, both sides of WWI paid a incredibly big price in terms of human life. About 8.5 million soldiers died as a result of the war. Another 21 million were wounded. This included starvation, disease, and slaughter. Economically, Europe lost a lot of money on the war. They lost around $338 billion because of the war. Farmland, homes, and villages have been destroyed.

In January 1918, President Wilson had a set of documents known as the Fourteen Points. These documents were created in the hopes of reaching a peaceful conclusion to the war. Some of the main points it wished to address was reducing armies and creating new borders and new nations so that people could decide what government that were under. France and Britain didn't agree and eventually the compromise that they settled on was The Treaty of Versailles. This was signed between Germany and the Allied Powers on June 28,1919 which created a League of Nations as was suggested as the fourteenth point in President Wilson's documents. Germany lost a substantial amount of land, had military restrictions, and took responsibility as the one who caused the war and had to pay for reparations. The problem with these treaties (there was a total of 5 of them), is that they created feelings of bitterness and betrayal. Additionally, the most dominant nation in the world (the United States), didn't agree with the treaty and it didn't lead to lasting peace.

The United Nations was made in order to protect its members from aggression. By aiding it's previous enemies they were able to promote good relationships throughout countries and receive support from others. Unlike the Treaty of Versailles people weren't excessively bitter or angry seething for revenge. The United Nations issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which put human right standards on all nations. Some examples are that all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights... and everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the security of person.

The upside of this would be mostly that growing rivalries and mutual distrust has made up these military alliances in Europe. The downside for this is that even if they might have the same enemy, it could cause disruption and it could potentially help push anybody into war.

Imperialism is a policy in which a strong nation takes over another and dominates them politically, like with military force, or diplomatically.

WWI: Examples include ancient China, Greece and Rome. It reached unmatched heights with European powers in the 19th century. European imperialism played a significant role in sparking WWI. Territories claimed by imperialists nations was often forced and subjugation, although there are examples of peaceful colonization.

WWII: In Germany, Hitler and his National Socialist Party rose to power, and their main idea of Nazism became the basis of German imperialism.

Nationalism is the belief that people should remain loyal mainly to their nation which, that is, to the people with whom they share a culture and history, rather than monarchy or empires.

WWI: The most direct way nationalism caused World War I was through the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Many oppressed Slavic groups in the Austro-Hungarian Empire wanted to form independent nation states.

WWII: An example of nationalism in WWII would be about the nationalism happening in Germany.
