• These countries were, originally, known as ECSC.
• Due to the success of this plan, other economic sectors were later included and signed the Treaty of Rome in 1957, creating the European Economic Community (EEC).
• The main idea was for people, goods, and services to move freely across boarders. 
• The EEC created a common market among its members through the eleminiation of most trade barriers and the establishment of a common external trade policy.
• The Treaty also provided for a common agricultural policy which was established in 1962 to protect EEC farmers from agricultural imports. 
• The first reduction in EEC internal tariffs was implemented in January 1959, and by July 1968, all internal tariffs had been removed.
• The EEC aimed to reduce tensions in the aftermath of World War 2, in particular it was hoped that integration would promote a lasting reconciliation of France and Germany.

- SEA brought important modifications to the foundational treaties of the 1950's that had established the EEC and the ECSC
- the SEA expanded the European Parliaments 
-powers to include a veto over the admittance of new member states and over agreements made with associated states, it also established the direct election of the parliament members
-began the world's largest trading area. It did this by permitting free movement of goods, capital, labour, and services among the member states
