How does the author of "The Seventh Man" reveal the narrator's fear?

The narrator in the beginning of the story has fear of the wave. He states that “it swallowed everything that mattered most to me” (12-13), and for a ten year old losing his best friend is heartbreaking, but the format the author used gave us a feeling that the kid had a fear of the wave since it took his best friend. “I had grown up on the shore and knew how frightening the ocean could be-the savagery with which it could strike unannounced.”(147-148) In this big storm he was in the “eye”(104) when everything had happened and he knew the dangers but when out anyway not thinking loosing “K” (41) could happen, but in the end he realizes that even after loosing “K”, he was not mad “K” wanted him to come with him. In the end “They tell us that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself; but I don’t believe that” (443) “Oh the fear is there all right. It comes to us in many different forms, at different times, and overwhelms us. But the most frightening thing we can do at such times is to turn our backs on it, to close our eyes. For then we take the most precious thing inside us and surrender it to something else. In my case, that something was the wave.” (444-449) In the end he went back to his home town and realized that K was just reaching out for him not trying to hurt him.
