"Did you know that hot, molten rock is oozing from the seafloor? Have you ever heard that whales sing as they travel? Can you imagine swimming beneath a thick sheet of ice? Do you know about the octopus that pretends it's a snake? If any of these questions interest you, you might want to learn about oceanography. Oceanography is the study of the earth's oceans and seas." (Gray 7).

The text begins by asking questions about content relating the ocean. These questions tell the reader that the ocean is vast area and requires multiple people to study it.

"The blobfish floats above the sea floor waiting for slow-moving prey to drift by. And the clownfish finds safety among poisonous sea anemones. All sea creatures depend on one another for food or protection." (Gray 31).

The second paragraph begins by describing how different sea creatures live. The third sentence in the paragraph explains that all sea creatures have different adaptations to the ocean environment. The message that the author is conveying to the reader is that each sea creature has a different adaptation to survive in the ocean environment.

"Some oceanographers are interested in landforms. They study the features of the seafloor. They look at underwater volcanoes and mountain ranges. They watch scalding hot water spew from holes in the seafloor. They try to figure out how these features change over time." (Gray 8).

"Some oceanographers study the water's movements. They look at how the water interacts with the air above it. They work to understand how the oceans affect the weather. Many other oceanographers are interested in plant and animal life. They learn how different organisms depend on each other for survival. Some oceanographers keep track of pollution in the ocean. They study how it harms the sea life. They also think of ways to protect the ocean environment from pollution." (Gray 9).

In these two paragraphs, the author uses the words, "Some oceanographers....". Following the beginning words in the sentence, action verbs are incorporated, which include study, look, and learn. Many action verbs are in the sentence to convey to the reader the oceanographers take action to study and learn about the ocean. They use what they have studied to determine how to make the ocean a better place. Additionally, the sentences are declarative with content specific words. This tells the reader that oceanographers take action to save our planet and also study different aspects of the ocean.

"Pressure also increases as you move deeper into the ocean. On land we don't notice it, but the weight of the atmosphere presses down on our bodies. In the ocean, water also presses down. As a diver descends, the amount of water above the diver increases. Therefore, the pressure on his or her body increases." (Gray 21).

This paragraph contains many transitions words. The author is using transition words to help the reader make compare and contrast. The author begins by informing the reader about pressure on land. The author then explains how pressure feels different in water. To direct the reader's attention from land to water, the author uses transition words and phrases such as "but," "In the ocean," and "As a diver descends."
