American Authors - "I'm Born To Run": Intro / The Dregs

"I'm Born To Run" is a song that highlights the nature of the 6 main characters. The tune alludes to the constant running and hiding that the crew have become one with due to their pasts and their current business in the Dregs, a criminal gang in the slums of Ketterdam. The lines "I'm gonna live my life, like I'm gonna die young; like it's never enough, like I'm born to run" in particular symbolize the fleeting nature of life in this fiction world and the constant danger Kaz and the other main characters are in throughout their various exploits and heists. They do whatever it takes to survive in their less-than-ideal environment, and that includes constantly being on the move.

NBA Youngboy - "Bring It On": Kaz

The song "Bring It On" by NBA Youngboy can be likened to Kaz's personality and attitude towards his surroundings. Since a young age, he was left to fend for himself, especially so after his brother was murdered. Since then, he took it upon himself to do whatever it takes to make a living, and is often called "the greediest human born" by the other members of his crew. "Bring It On" connects to Kaz's belief that he can take whatever the world throws at him and come out on top. Some may call this arrogant, but his track record proves that he can live up to that promise. The line "Ever since a toddler, been a problem, they can't f***in' get me" could relate to his childhood and how, despite him being 17, he is still a criminal mastermind that has never been caught, and still hasn't even at the end of the story. Additionally, the line "Tell 'em bring it on, let's get it; Mama, I got demons inside my body" could relate to how he has been called a demon by many that crossed paths with him, including Matthias Helvar of his crew.

Hozier - "Arsonist's Lullabye": Kaz

"Arsonist's Lullabye" is a more emotional song that Kaz would relate to if he could actually hear it. It delivers a message of sorrow and caution, telling listeners that "All you have is your fire / And the place you need to reach / Don’t you ever tame your demons / But always keep ’em on a leash". Kaz strictly adheres to the philosophy that nobody is to be trusted, and it is noted multiple times throughout the book that he views the people he is in constant contact with as only temporary allies, and people he needs around as "investments". He even says himself that "I have my own share of demons. The difference between us is that I can tell them what to do". This correlates with the aforementioned lyric in "Arsonist's Lullabye", and helps bring depth to his character and how the readers view him.

Digital Daggers - "The Devil Within": Inej

When I heard this song for the first time, I thought it was particularly dark and more soulful than other songs I've listened to. After reading "Six of Crows", I felt that this song could be attributed to Inej, particularly the Inej of the later chapters and near the end of the novel. She made a very threatening promise that once her share of the money from their giant heist was given to her, she would take it and use every last dollar to destroy the slavers that took her from her homeland and shut down the brothel that she indentured under, and swore it on the gods that she worshipped. That promise resonated with me, and I didn't believe for a second that this was an empty promise. The lines "I made myself at home in the cobwebs and the lies / I’m learning all your tricks, I can hurt you from inside" especially showed a facet of her personality as "The Wraith", a skilled assassin that works for Kaz and the Dregs. Inej is a ghost, almost literally, and throughout the story she is noted to be very sneaky and pops up where people least expect her. You wouldn't be able to see her coming even if she was right behind you. That's why this song fits Inej and her personality accurately.

The Score - "Dreamin" ft. blackbear: Inej

"Dreamin" struck me as a song that was way too hype to ever fit a character like Inej, who is very quiet and only speaks when she truly believes in what she says, thus earning her the nickname "The Wraith". Even though the tune of the song doesn't really relate to what Inej's character actually is, the lyrics resonate with her personality and actions throughout the plot. In particular, the line "I'm fighting the lows that creep in my mind / I try to remember that life is a ride" could relate to her mental turmoil and slight PTSD from her time at the Menagerie, a brothel that she was indentured to. Despite this, she decides to make attempts to forget her past and focus on the present, and that focused attitude is what makes her valuable to the Dregs and able to carry out the various missions given to her.

Panic! At The Disco - "Say Amen (Saturday Night)": Jesper

Jesper Fahey is, at heart, a gambler. One that, despite the countless losses he's had, never gives up and always enjoys the thrill of betting. He got so addicted that he bet his whole family's farm away in cash, and them promptly lost it. "Say Amen" fits Jesper's bill perfectly, with the line "I pray for the wicked on the weekend
Mama, can I get another amen?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's Saturday night, yeah" matching his carefree personality and gambling nature. Another major part of his character development is the loss of his mother, and this is reflected in that line and throughout the song and book.

Another song that reflects Jesper's frivolous characteristics and actions is "Bang!" by AJR. It accurately portrays Jesper's most noticeable personality traits through the line "I'm way too young to lie here forever
I'm way too old to try so whatever come hang (come hang)
Let's go out with a bang". This line in particular could show how Jesper views life and the surroundings around him. He had already lost a lot back in his childhood, and he wanted to be free of any burdens back then. Now, he is doing everything he can to live a life of enjoyment, even if it means losing all his money through betting.

Taylor Swift - "Mirrorball": Wylan

Wylan's entire character isn't really detailed throughout the book, but we do know a lot about his past as the plot progresses. He's a 16 year old demolitions expert who is the son of a rich merchant that seemingly loves him and wants him back home. However, we find out that Wylan doesn't really understand who he is, why he's where he is now in life and what he wants to do. Basically, he's going through an existential crisis on a large scale. "Mirrorball" reflects that sorrow and the want to fit in with the rest of the crew that Wylan shows. The other members of the crew refer to him as a "kid" even though Kaz is just a year older than him. The line "I'm a mirrorball
I can change everything about me to fit in
You are not like the regulars
The masquerade revelers" details how he wants to fit in and doesn't have a lot of regard for who he really is, and thus changes everything about him with little regard for his familial ties. In the end, however, it is revealed that his father hates him and for all intents and purposes disowned Wylan.

"Daddy Issues" is quite literally the best description for the source of all of Wylan's problems and insecurities throughout the plot of "Six of Crows". His rough relationship with his father is passed off as Wylan going through his rebellious phase at the beginning of the book, but near the end it is revealed that his father is a traitorous person who disowned Wylan a while ago simply because he could not read, and thus could not inherit the family merchant business. The lines "This time I gotta know
Where did my daddy go?
I'm not entirely here
Half of me has disappeared" give an insight into Wylan's feelings about his father and how he wishes he wasn't such a disappointment. Because of his father's actions, Wylan ran away from home and decided to join up with Kaz and the other Dregs, eventually joining them on their giant heist.

Matthias Helvar is a complex character who was once a witch-hunter in his home country of Fjerda (inspired by modern-day Scandinavia). He met Nina, who is a "witch" and his whole life changed, but not necessarily for the good. After he and Nina arrived in Ketterdam, Nina complained to the authorities that he was a slaver, and he got thrown in jail for 1 year. Jail in Ketterdam is a very harsh environment, and when Kaz, Nina, and the others rescued him, he was ready to murder Nina without a second thought for putting him into the prison after everything he did for her. The lines "But if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?" especially show Matthias' outlook towards Nina and her personality after she got him imprisoned him, and this only changes after she thoroughly explains what she did to try and get him out, and how much she regretted what she did. This all took place over the long period of the heist, of course.

Nina is a very interesting character that seems like your average shallow girl, but actually has a deep connection to the rest of the characters through her exploits as a soldier and student at a special academy for people with powers. However, her attitude that she fakes in front of others is what people usually use to judge her characteristics, and the lines "I am a diamond, and diamonds are forever
My love is timeless, 'cause diamonds are forever, oh no
Money don't buy class, and I can't live quite like that, like that" accurately portrays how she puts herself out to the world and how people view her as a harmless pretty girl. Additionally, this song mostly reflects her appearance to people around her, and not who she truly is. Almost like a mask of sorts.

"Do I Wanna Know" is a fantastic song that embodies the fighting spirit of Matthias and encapsulates his brash nature and stubborn personality. The song is very fast paced and fits Matthias very well. Lines such as " Are there some aces up your sleeve?
Have you no idea that you're in deep?
I've dreamt about you nearly every night this week
How many secrets can you keep?" could relate to Matthias' distrust of Nina and constant suspicion of the rest of the crew members. In the end, however, he ends up helping the crew complete their heist successfully. Although at times it seemed like he betrayed them, he actually played a very convincing role of a traitor once they had infiltrated the secure compound.w

However, the meaning of the words changes a bit and gives a more sad tone that can be seen when Van Eck, the person who sent the crew on the heist, ended up betraying them and kidnapping Inej, to which Kaz was furious and resolved to get her back no matter what. That scene, and Pekka Rollins' short dialogue with one of his men, brought the book "Six of Crows" to a wonderfully written close.
