Although social media can be used for many positive connections many individuals have been violating the commandments of computer ethics by using it for negative positing through the media. If you see cyberbullying or improper use of social media please spread positivity instead, standup and do the right thing to keep everyone safe!

Reflection on Ethical Computing:

Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate the most often?

Out of all of the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics I believe students violate number one the most which is "Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people." This typically includes actions of cyberbullying, spreading hate and hurtful words to other individuals. I believe that this is seen throughout all ages due to most if not all interaction being based through the computer and the mainstream media. This is very dangerous because it is affecting many individuals as well as mental health nationally.

Why do you think these violations occur?

I believe that these violations occur as well as occur so often because there is a lack of awareness from most individuals. I feel that most people will see something online and do not believe that the words said by people have that much of an impact on them. I also believe that there is a great amount of influence from others including peers. For example an individual may be feeling peer pressured from their "friend" to post something bad about someone else so they would be able to fit in. I also do not think people realize that there can be great consequences when taking risks like this so they believe they can take the action.

What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

I believe that we should educate people on digital ethics and state that there can and will be serious consequences when making those kinds of statements. I believe that there also needs to be stronger policies in schools against any form of cyberbullying. Lastly, I believe adding more positivity online would benefit the use of the media a great amount. I believe that it would be very beneficial to encourage promoting kindness instead of hate and stating harmful words to others.
