My personal beliefs are that autism isn’t quite the slower or impeded progression of an individual in life, particularly in social aspects, but more of that their minds hold perspectives and register other perspectives in an almost completely unique manner. 

The reason for the belief that they were once considered as carrying a disability in life is that since a specific group of perspectives were standardised and used as a benchmark for normalcy, people holding autism may be seen as abnormal for their lower tendency to follow these common ideas.

This could be because their minds have been configured naturally to register and perceive information, such as these perspectives, in a different manner, typically in a higher sensitivity than usual.
