putting up monuments isn't only to honor somebody but to tell a story. Other people have different views on what should or should not be allowed. That's why having an opinion on this can go both ways.

If the united states can spend as much as it does today on the military they can pay a fraction of that cost to take down some statues with a negative view point

On top of the cost, it's not even worth taking the statues down, and the issue of where to place the statues afterwards taking them down will occur.

The statues were not built to remember people. The statues were built in the time of Jim Crow and the Civil rights movement in the south to signify a white supremacy movement during that era.

The Washington monument was to honor the good things that Washington did for the country, but monuments of the confederacy are monuments to people who fought for a morally wrong cause and fought against their country for it.

People should be held accountable and remembered for ALL of their actions. I'm sure some of the men that fought for the confederate army did good things too. If we exclude Washington owning slaves because he did more good things.

First of all the STATUE OF LIBERTY has nothing in common with statues of confederate generals. The statue of liberty is a symbol of america not of Americas most painful past.

I agree with what Ben said. African Americans now have rights compared to when the statues were originally built. They gained a voice and an ability to put their "voice" into fruition.

The North was primarily fighting against the South seceding.. Slavery was a factor in the war, but to say the North fought the war to end slavery would be a stretch

In response to Hayden. I'm not trying to relate the Statue of Liberty to the statues of the confederate generals. I am simply wondering how far we are willing to take this because no one can determine who or what offends somebody. If a group of people are offended by the Statue of Liberty FOR EXAMPLE, and we take thee confederate statues down, who's to say that we cannot tear down the Statue of Liberty?

If the statues are up of confederate generals because they are apart of southern history, prominent abolitionists are also a part of southern history such as Harriett Tubman yet they have significantly less public recognition lol

Statues have many different meanings , and really depends on when and where they were built. I think Statues of Nathan Bedford Forrest are usually in favor of white supremacy

Statues are part of our history, however bad and gruesome, and we should know our history. However I do think that we should put statues up to a referendum to the people. It is still state property ,and will have to have a support to tear them down if they so wished. Decided their wrong morally wont do anything to get rid of them

I agree with Nathan's point: i don't think that the statues should be destroyed...a lot of people would feel better if they were to be put in a museum to better commemorate the events of the past...everything that happens in the past should be taken note of

The fact of the matter is the statues oppress people who have been oppressed throughout history. The statues are idealizing people who fought to keep them as property and don't need to be a constant reminder in every day places about this. We as a nation need to focus on the better of all our people and there is no reason why we need statues associated with white supremacists. Those who say taking them down is catering to people for no reason have never been in the position that blacks have been in. They can't relate to their ill feeling and should keep their opinions out of it.

I think removing and placing the statues in museums would be a good compromise between the two opposing side. People who choose to go honor or see the statues can, but those who are against the statues don't have to go, and the statues won't be in a public area

People are acting like if we take down the statues we will forget about the Civil War or Confederacy that will never be forgotten. Black people, especially, will always remember their dark past and don't need to be reminded. They don't help us "learn from our past" they show everything wrong with the past and only empower the people who still act like they are in the 1800's. If anything they should be in a museum not in parks.
