If your nonverbal communication accents your verbal communication, it can be used to emphasize what you are saying verbally. For example, if I am explaining to a potential employer that I am great at teamwork, I'd make sure my nonverbal communication accents this. I could do this by emphasizing a word or phrase used when explaining a certain time I helped a group succeed or solved a big problem while being a part of a group.

When nonverbal communication complements verbal communication, it's generally used to complete messages said verbally, by adding meaning through the non-verbal means in which it could not be communicated verbally. For example, at a job interview I may smile when explaining that my last employer was great, but show disapproval when explaining I had to leave for a reason out of our control, I had to leave the company. (This may show the employer that I am a loyal employee)

Using nonverbal communication that contradicts verbal communication shows that you may be untruthful. Things like facial expressions that don't match your tone of voice, or avoiding eye contact when telling a lie, can show this. If I claim to have experience in a field of work, but say so in a sheepish, unconfident voice joined by scarce eye contact, it can tell my interviewer that I'm being untruthful and may affect my likeliness of being hired.

This may be a turn-off for companies to hire me if I attempt to control the conversation. I could do this by interrupting my interviewer with facial expressions or hand movements. For example, if I say "yes?" in attempt to learn more about something they have to say, I can couple that with raising my eyebrows, leaning in, or having attentive eyes to show I'm listening to learn more.
