Clipping Ferret nails

On Tuesday 3rd October, we clipped ferret nails.
I got into a group with two other people in my animal care group.
We first put ourselves in roles. James decided to trim the ferrets nails, I decided to restrain the ferret and Stacy has also helped restraining the ferret. We have done this because it will improve our team working skills.
The Procedure
First, we disinfected the area we were working in, gathered our equipment; nail clippers and a towel.
I safely picked up and restrained the ferret so she couldn't get scared and run away. While James was clipping her nails, I was restraining her and Stacy petting her and comforting her.
When our ferret got too fidgety, we decided to put her down and let her have a break for a few minutes.
We used a towel to play with her and when I restrained her again, we put the towel over her face to distract her and so that she feels safe. Unfortunately, she didn't like the towel on her face, so we took it off and carried on.
We did complete our procedure successfully. The ferret did not get hurt or scared.
We have clipped the nails so they don't over-grown and cause infections. The animal will be out of pain and will not be uncomfortable.
I have gained some more teamwork, communication and confidence in the activity we did.
Improvements....
To not get distracted on other things going on in the room.

On Wednesday 4th October our group got to clean out the cats!
Me and Stacy picked the two cats who are housed together, Sebastian and Piglet.
First, we put the two heavy cats into separate pet carriers. So they will not be in the way or don't escape while we are cleaning out.
Once the cats were out of their enclosure, we started taking out their beds, litter trays and toys.
Then, Stacy cleaned out the litter tray and brushed their toys and beds down.
I have disinfected and mopped the floor and side tables.
We have done this to keep the enclosure clean and free from bad hygiene.
Once we had finished cleaning out we returned their beds, litter trays and toys that are clean and safe to use.
Health check.
Me and Stacy both together weighed both of the cats because we were concerned about Sebastian being overweight and we also checked if the cats had any physical problems. They turned out to be really healthy cats.
I gained some communication skills and working with others.

Bathing and grooming dogs

27/11/17
Today, me, Tiegan, James and Alex have been working as a team to bath and groom a dog.
First, James and Alex checked and sorted our working area.
I picked out a slicker brush, undercoat comb and a soft bristle brush.
When we have prepared our working area, me and James walked to the kennels then we put a lead on our dog that Sarah told us to bath.
We walked back to the grooming room with the dog, then we put him on the grooming table and checked his eyes, teeth and ears. We have done this to check if there is anything wrong with the dog.
Next, we given him a brush with a slicker brush to brush out excess hair. We have done this so the hair doesn't get in the way while we are bathing Rocky the dog.
Next, we safely carried Rocky to the pet bath and checked the temperature of the water to check if it wasn't too warm or too cold. We used our hands to do this. We have done this because if it was too cold, the dog would get too cold and shake or catch a cold or an illness related to being cold. If the water was too hot, it would burn the skin of the dog.
We bathed the dog successfully, without us or the dog getting hurt or stressed.
We used shampoo for the dog to get rid of all the dirt out of the hair. then we rinsed the shampoo off the dog using warm water.
Once we had finished bathing the dog, we took him out on to the grooming table with a towel. Then, I dried him with a towel, James used a hair dryer, Alex was holding Rocky, and Tiegan cleaned up the grooming bath and mopped the floor. She also put a wet floor sign to let other students and staff know that the floor is wet and very slippery.
I have gained some skills:
-teamwork
-communication
improvements:
- working as a team
-confidence

First, we all washed out hands as its hygiene we have to keep good.
We first separated the adult males from the adult female and the babies. We have done this so they don't reproduce again.
We have done this by checking their sex and put the two males with the other males in the other enclosure, then, half of the group went to observe their behaviour.
Me and the rest of the group went to catch the baby degus and check their sex. I picked one up and restrained it and checked for a penis or a vulvar, mine looked male as I couldn't find a vulvar, and the penis came out when I pressed on it, and we couldn't find anything then we decided it was male because the distance between the anus and genitals.
Then, other people checked other baby degus and then we put the babies back in their enclosure with their mother.
I have gained more communication and team working skills.
Improvements is to stay on task.
