Paul is a young adult in a private high school who does not wish to be there. He wishes to be a famous and rich actor in New York. He does not like his little middle-class life and feels that everyone is holding his wealthy life from him. He does not want to work for his wealth he wants it handed to him so he does not have the motivation or work ethic.

It seems pretty clear that Paul starts to blur reality and dreams together. He lives in "another world" and has a hard time accepting reality. He spends his time in NYC believing that is the life he should have rather than owning up to the fact that he stole money and has done something morally wrong.
