McDonald wrote a letter the president which Smith claimed McDonald knowingly sending lies about Smith. Smith has gone on to say that lies like these have ruined his career and reputation. However McDonald brought this to the court staying that it goes against his first amendment right because the libel suit was in a letter which technically makes it a petition. The court had voted 8-0 Smith.
