Central Problem: Finance problems - not enough money to operate in current state. Not enough information to get to the source of these problems but could be lack of change/responding to student needs and fiscal situations. (not letting go of the past) Ex: How long has auxiliaries been losing $300k? Is this 1 year or on-going?

Secondary problem: Fac/staff morale and worry about uncertain future. Initial changes were made with program elimination but was money saved? (no staff cut so were these cuts in programs a good thing?) Uncertainty worry people.

I 100% agree with the financial and morale problems. Playing devils advocate, though -- could we consider going deeper to the root cause of the financial trouble? Perhaps the central problem is more like institutional reputation... which is causing low enrollments and hurting the bottom line. Poor reputation could be also be the cause of bookstore and losing money and lack of giving support. Just throwing it out there.

Of course, managing finances poorly can snowball fast so decisions based on the above are still a problem, for sure!

The central problem that HDCC is facing is the financial problems, such as low enrollment, the auxiliary units losing money, and no money to build a residence hall etc. The second problem I think is the effectiveness of academic programs. For instance, there are some starred programs or struggling programs, such as "nursing" in the college. I think these two problems affect and interrelate to each other.

Central problem: Financial hardship at the academic institution. They are putting money into programs which are not profitable.
Secondary: The Staff and Faculty feel like they are spread too thin and are running into burnout. Perhaps too many of the tenure staff are not doing enough while taking in most of the salaries (an all too evident issue across all of higher education).

PE: Financial issues are indeed a "problem" for the campus--think here how you see this as an outcome. Roxane challenges the need to look under the surface. What in the system caused the financial issues to occur? How are campus problems communicated? What is the influence of the president's leadership approach? If a consultant came and showed the campus how to solve the financial problem, would this "solve" the campus's problem?

JW: I believe financial issues are an outcome of a problem. I think the central problem is that the functions and program of HDCC are out of alignment with what it says it will do. So an institution wide conversation of "who are we and what do we do" would be a good place to start. The secondary issue is staff moral. the example with the nursing program could have been handled in a different way that would have motivated staff and also kept the foot on the gas for the program to continue to innovate.

The central problem is clearly a financial one. It is a big problem as well. It is not necessarily a problem of expenses being too high, though the desire by some on campus to build an additional residence hall given the current financial climate doesn’t help. This is a financial problem whereby revenues are declining. To make matters worse, the revenues are declining in multiple areas (enrollments, auxiliaries, and foundation).

The secondary problem is also clear. It is a problem with employee morale. The faculty and staff are feeling taxed and burdened. They are disappointed their hard work and extensive efforts to correct problems, specifically enrollment problems, are not being met with more positive responses from the administration, namely the President.
