Why does the school board not exercise greater caution when hiring? Maddy Maggio

So far, I've learned background check policies and what qualifies teachers differ by school district. Any criminal arrest, charge, or judicial action must be reported to human resources within one day by all school employees and applicants. The policy states that if a current teacher reports an offense, the superintendent must notify the State Board of Education. Minor traffic violations, such as speeding or parking tickets, and expunged arrests, charges, or convictions, are exempt from reporting. More and more state courts are holding school districts liable for some form of negligent administration, ranging from failing to properly investigate applicants' backgrounds before hiring to failing to properly supervise those applicants who are hired by school districts.

https://heinonline.org/HOL/LandingPage?handle=hein.journals/jlas5&div=11&id=&page= https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/crime/article274167370.html

What I need to learn more about is what the school boards are overlooking in their background checks and how applicants with criminal records pass their background checks with flying colors. Also, how are their violations/offenses not being noted or dismissed when evaluating their paperwork, as this is critical to pay attention to? Finally, why do background check policies and qualifications differ by school district?

In what ways is gender inequality visible in Arab countries? (Joy)

Gender discrimination is complex and varies across countries, including those in the Arabic-speaking world. It's important to recognize that individuals may have unique experiences, with progress in some areas and ongoing challenges in others. I have researched the possibility of gender equality in these countries and the recent findings. These discriminations could be included in Legal Inequalities: In some Arabic countries, legal frameworks may contain discriminatory provisions against women. For instance, laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and child custody may favor men.

Education:

While progress has been made, there are still instances where girls and women face barriers to education. Workplace Discrimination:

Women in Arabic countries may face challenges wage gaps and limited opportunities for leadership positions are also concerns.

Social and Cultural Norms:

Societal expectations may limit women’s freedom and choices, dictating their behavior, clothing, and career choices. Violence Against Women:

Legal and social support for victims may be limited.

Through my researches. Women have been granted some rights, including education. Since 2017, UN Women's global initiative, Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces, has focused on preventing and addressing sexual harassment against women and girls in public spaces.

My question is: Are there any countries that deny women's rights like Arabic countries?

Sources:

https://givingcompass.org/article/12-steps-to-achieve-gender-equality-in-our-lifetimes-global-development-professionals-network-the-guardian

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/menasource/why-is-gender-equality-important-to-the-arab-world-s-economies/

Complex Family Life. What helps families cope with their issues?

I chose this topic because I have a very complex family life myself, so I do have a lot of my own bias towards this topic. I struggled a lot as a kid and I don't think the issues that can arise in families are talked about enough or that the importance isn't stressed enough to resolve them. My family had an issue of sweeping the arguments, the low finances, going to the food pantry, my parents religiously arguing, all of that under the rug. This never solved our issues but in fact, made them worse. I hope that going forward that more families have aid within their community to assist in the issues they face. What I need to do more research on is; where can families find the right help they need? Where do these issues primarily occur? Are families reaping enough of the benefits that they can be provided either by the government or from counseling centers? (SNAP, EBT, Therapy sessions, financial assistance, etc). How are the children affected within complex families? (in any circumstance; divorce, eviction, instability, difficulty expressing opinions and feelings throughout the family, substance abuse, sexual or physical abuse, etc). My first article to start researching was - https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapy-types/family-systems-therapy .
How does a good health support system affect the success of a diabetic's journey? Abrianna Ingles)

To be a diabetic is very complex. There are many different parts to living with this disease, than meets the eye. In order to be successful with your care, receiving support in all relationships is important. Whether that is support from your physicians, your family, or even your school. All three of these things have an impact on your journey. During my research process I have found a few different articles that show the effects of having a good support system vs. not having one.

This first article I found talks about the importance of the support from these relationships and how it can help the diabetic. It also briefly touches on some of the negative things a diabetic can experience from not having the right support system. This article also provides an example of a camp that is diabetic support focused for all ages. https://www.modernhealthcare.com/care-delivery/importance-caregiver-support-and-education-patients-diabetes

Another article I found talks about a class action settlement that was approved vs. a school district in New York for kids with diabetes. These children have been excluded from extracurricular and field trips. These same schools failed to develop individualized plans for these children with diabetes. It touches on the federal law that was set in place to protect children with diabetes and other illnesses in their school settings from discrimination. It also touches on the lack of awareness and education these school districts have and are unable to provide adequate support to these students if a nurse is not present. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/education/2023/04/27/nyc-schools-ordered-up-accommodations-students-diabetes/11746398002/

Something I need to learn more about is the "Section 504" law. I myself, did have a 504 plan in school but I never knew the full extent of it. I don't think a lot of young children and adults know what it means for them. I also need to learn more about how they are implementing this law into education plans today?

I have been researching the topic of the gym community. I first thought the gym was just a simple place to work out to get fit, but I did not realize the problems that come with it to some people. Ranging from self confidence to shyness, the term "gymtimidation" has been created to describe how the gym can make some people feel. I did not know that there were many factors about the gym that could be harmful. I have to research more things on how the gym community can be harmful and not as open to the public. I've also learnt about body dysmorphia in the gym and how the gym adds fuel to that when people see others bodies compared to their own. I also need to learn ways to combat the negatives of the gym.

What are the impacts of employment on a college student’s overall performance?

Many college students are employed whilst trying to obtain their degree, but my research largely indicates that it can do more harm than good. There are a multitude of issues contributing to this, rising tuition rates, student loan debt, unlivable minimum wage, etc., but in my research, I am specifically focusing on the way that maintaining a job impacts student performance. One important point that has been reinforced in multiple sources that I examined is that there is a threshold of weekly working hours that establishes when student employment statistically begins to have negative impacts. This number is 25 hours per week, which may seem like a lot, but many students surpass this number significantly. With this in mind, it’s also important to recognize that this issue disproportionately affects students that come from low-income families. Working while attending college can cause the likelihood of graduation to decrease, grades to decline, and motivation to reach abysmal levels. It’s not uncommon for students to invest their time, money, and hope into earning a degree just to be forced to give it up due to financial issues. It’s evident to me and many professionals within the higher education system that there is a crisis coming as so many students are no longer finding it financially viable to attend college, contributing to issues like the wealth gap, debt, and decreased college graduation, not to mention the damage caused to countless students.

I would like to know more about the experience of students that are unable to finish their college education and instead have to unenroll and dedicate all of their time to the workforce. While this isn’t a situation that I’ve personally experienced, I think it’s important to gather insight from a multitude of sources in order to get a well-rounded picture of how working in college impacts students. I would also be interested in knowing if graduation rates at universities have decreased at all in recent years as this could be an indicator that the issue of student employment has already begun to take its toll on the National scale.

I found this resource to be really helpful and it covers a wide range of smaller concerns within the issue of working student success. The beginning can be a bit data heavy, so if this is at all intimidating, I recommend skipping ahead to where the author begins to list the ways that working as a student prevents higher education from being effective.

How are the negative actions towards minorities in Oregon, IL affecting those in the community, and what is being done to stop it? - Elliot Askam

Oregon, Illinois is a small town of less than 4,000 people, with a history of treating people of minorities negatively. Through my research, I have found students who have stated that they have been called the N-word or harassed in other ways throughout the entirety of their time in the Oregon School District, including kindergarten. This issue is so prominent that one of the students mentioned they got used to it going into elementary school. A parent of one of the students who spoke up in an article with 13 WREX, said her daughter had been affected so strongly by the indiscrimination that she now wears hoodies year-round, even in 90+ degree heat, to cover her skin. In the same article, students spoke about a meeting that was held to discuss these issues, but they mentioned that even after the meeting they saw no change. The writer of the article reached out to the superintendent regarding the students' concerns but was denied an interview and received a statement saying that there is a process in place to handle these issues and that the district takes them seriously. However, the students, both from the article and personal connections, have repeatedly seen nothing be done. In fact, one student went to the principal for help and was brushed off. From what was explained, it appears this student received no help, no reference to a guidance counselor, and the student doing the harassing was not dealt with at all. The only meaningful thing that has been done that I have found up to this point, pending interviews with current teachers, was an email from the high school principal asking teachers to not let this behavior occur in the classroom. People of a race that is not Caucasian are not the only minorities receiving these negative views and interactions. A study regarding rural towns in general, found that 94 percent of rural LGBT students heard homophobic language at school, nearly 9 in 10 rural LGBTQ students had been verbally harassed, and 1 in 5 students had been physically assaulted at school because of their sexual orientation in the past year. This, as well as the chart above, came from a study done by the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network. Overall, the students are feeling unheard, unaccommodated, and are being singled out by other students repeatedly while little to nothing is being done.

13 WREX: Students accuse Oregon School District of ignoring racism problem at schools

Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLEN) Study: Strengths and Silences

What kind of impact can a community have on an individual? Kristin F

Based on my sources I have learned that feeling connected to a community can impact your well-being and your mental health. Feeling part of a community impacts your mental health because of things such as belonging, support, and purpose. Belonging to a group allows you to feel connected to others and gives you a “sense of belonging”. Support lets you know that you have people you can count on when you are having a bad day or going through something. Having a purpose gives you a sense of identity by playing the role of a friend who is always there for someone when they need someone to talk to. Without these elements it can take a toll on your mental health and cause us to feel isolated from others. A community can also reduce stress because we have people that we can relate to and can help us in situations based on their own personal experiences. Some ways that you can become more interactive with a community is through clubs, church, going to community events, and sports. Overall a community has a huge impact on an individual's mental health by giving them a sense of connection, importance, and acceptance.

The Importance of Community | Psychology Today

The Importance of Community and Mental Health | NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness

One thing that I would need to learn more about is the negative impacts a community can have on a person. Such as negative impacts to mental health and overall well-being.

Is the gym really a judge-free environment? (Julian)

This feeling can sometimes be referred as gymtimidation. This feeling can't really be explained but it's the reason why my question is important. Because so many people feel this way, it must be because some people are actually judging you. What I found is that we are psychologically judgy meaning that we are constantly judging other people by the way they dress or look. This part of us is just natural and is the reason why some people at the gym don't feel safe. What I need to learn more about is if the amount of weight you can pull or the amount of muscle you have is affecting the way people look at you.

The manga market has seen a real boom, thanks to both printed and digital formats gaining popularity. Digital manga, especially, is on the rise due to the increasing demand for e-books and their easy accessibility. An interesting trend in the industry is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating manga, making the production process smoother. However, with this growth comes the challenge of manga collectors facing out of stock issues, particularly for rare or highly sought-after titles. Strategies to tackle this include checking digital platforms for availability, joining online manga collector communities for insights and tips, keeping an eye on resale markets on online platforms or auctions, reaching out to local retailers for potential restocking or special orders, and maintaining patience and persistence in the search for out of stock items. To dive deeper into this topic and get the most recent information on manga collecting and strategies for dealing with out of stock items, exploring recent articles, forums, or industry reports is my strategy. Reputable sources like industry publications, collector forums, and news websites covering the manga market can provide valuable insights for me to answer my question.

Sources:

The 2023 International market status https://www.reportlinker.com/p06464202/Manga-Global-Market-Report.html?utm_source=GNW

The starter guide to collecting:

Manga Collecting - Everything You Need to Know - Anime Collective

Main areas to buy manga and the Pros/Cons of each vender:

Where to Buy Manga - Everything You Need To Know - Anime Collective

How can artificial intelligence improve the burnout rate for healthcare employees? - Rakiya Zaucha

Treating patients with complex conditions at the Department of Veterans Affairs can be quite time consuming for both patients and clinicians. There is no automated system for a particular patient's health summary to be uploaded for the patient's care team to analyze and reference. This in turn means waiting for faxes or mailed records to come through, potentially putting the patient's health at risk. This information needs to be accessible in a timely manner, because health can deteriorate quickly so it's important to be prepared to act within a timely manner. This is where AI can help. Artificial intelligence systems can be designed to imitate human thinking so that it can assist in the patient care process. For example, allowing the clinicians to "search" specific details that they are looking for to determine a plan of care. I have learned that right now, the VA is holding a contest for teams to submit their AI systems. The winner of these contests will likely see their designs implemented to modernize VA technology.
