It was so interesting to see how some students got so much more of a head start on the race and it was nothing that they did themselves to get there. The students that were in the back had a further starting point and it made their chances of winning the race so much more challenging. It correlates directly to life and what some of our students face each day. These things are out of our students' control and they may come into our building with an automatic disadvantage (like the race) because of things that are out of their control and we as teachers need to understand that and take that knowledge into our daily teaching. Another spark was that diversity needs to be embraced and spoken about even from a young age. Not only do they have lessons that build classroom community, embrace cultural differences, and build a sense of identity for our littles, but they also have lessons for being a critical consumer and to be aware of ads on the internet. Kids are being exposed to the internet and advertisements on the internet now more than ever, and it is important to teach students that not all advertisements are good - many are biased and harmful. I really enjoyed seeing developmentally appropriate lessons for the primary grades.

I think talking about recent news events with students at an appropriate age level to know we support and care for them is very important. These are hard issues to talk about with children, but we need to, so that children can share how they are feeling.
