In 590 BC a man named Solon created a set of laws that were less harsh and gave more freedom to regular citizens. Under Solon's law, all free men living in Athens became citizens. But his efforts were not enough for the Athenians, for they were ready to end the rule of the aristocracy.

The Athenians wanted a new government. A noble named Peisistratus overthrew the oligarchy, and became the ruler of Athens. Peisistratus was a tyrant, which meant a leader who held power through the use of force. Peisistratus brought peace and prosperity to the city. During his rule, he made many improvements to Athens. After he died his son took over. Because of the aristocrats, the tyrants fell from power and the aristocrats ruled again.

Although he was a member of one of the most powerful families in Athens, he didn't want aristocrats to run the government of Athens.

Athens remained a democracy for about 170 years. It reached its height under an elected leader named Pericles. He led the government from about 460 BC until he died in 429 BC. Pericles believed that participating in government was just as important as defending Athens in war. Pericles payed people who served in public offices or were on jury, and encouraged the people of Athens to spread democracy to other parts of Greece.

Eventually democracy came to an end in Athens, as Athens was conquered by the Macedonians from the north of Greece. After they were conquered, they still had democracy, but it had very limited powers. The Macedonian king ruled like a dictator. People tried not to upset the king. Before long, the Athenians lost the democracy when, in 320 BC, a new king took over and ended Athenian democracy forever.
