-Successful in weakening Russian aggression against other nations in western Europe
-40 years of peace in European nations.
-US sent soldiers into Europe in the 1950s to counter Soviet attacks if & when they occurred.

-With the launch of Sputnik, the first earth satellite, in October 1957, the Soviet Union demonstrated that it now had the means to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles against the United States, against which there was no defense.

-Charles de Gaulle, the president of France, wanted Europe to be a loose confederation over French leadership. So France withdrew from NATO.

-European nations became less scared of the Soviet Union

-European nations were not content with a lot of the decision the US was making, such as being involved in the Vietnam War & disregarding parts of NATO, such as not letting Turkey use American military stuff to fight Greece.
