EXAMPLE: To begin, in the myth, "The Earth on Turtle's Back" retold by Michael Caduto and Joseph Bruchac, an explanation of the Earth's beginning is clearly depicted. Often, early Native American stories used common, archetypal characters to help tell their stories. In this myth, the "chief" archetype is obvious. The chief is a powerfully important part of Native American society. He is thought to be strong, brave, smart, and loyal to his people. In "The Earth on Turtle's Back" the chief represents a God-like persona. First, the chief lives in "Skyland" which is located in the clouds. This is obviously comperable to the biblical "heaven". Also, the chief in the story is able to remove a large tree, "At last, with one great effort, he uprooted the tree and placed it on its side'. This supernatural capability is a common, archetypal characteristic of Native American, origin myths. Further, this myth also .......

In the three poems from the textbook, the authors use several literary tools to develop the Anglo Saxon theme of loneliness. For example, in the poem, "The Wife's Lament" translated by Ann Stanton, the theme of lonliness is obviously conveyed. Through the situation where the wife is forced to leave the community, the audience is able to truly feel the sense of lonliness that is felt by the exiled wife. The tool that the author uses to convey this them is a kenning. In the third stanza, the translator states, "For this my heart grieves; that I should find the man well matched to me hard of fortune mournful of mind...". In this line from the poem, the repeated "m" sound in the words, "man, mournful of mind, me" seem to convey a sense of sadness and isolation. This kenning certainly seems to foster a keen sense of loneliness.

The poem is about an exile wandering the lands. The exile discusses how alone he feels and how his heart his full of sorrow. In the poem, the author describes loneliness by using the excerpt "No wonder therefore, in all the world, if a shadow darkens upon my spirit, when I reflect on the fate of men". This excerpt contains kennings and supports the theme of loneliness by meaning if the man is to become more depressed.

To begin, in the poem
"The Wanderer" translated by Charles W. Kennedy imagery is used to support the theme of loneliness. The theme loneliness is portrayed through the earth-stepper describing how miserable it is when you have been exiled, having sorrow be your only friend. The following excerpt "In rapture he greets them; in gladness, he scans Old comrades remembered. But they melt into air With no word of greeting to gladden his heart. Then again surges his sorrow upon him." Gives us the image of being back in the mead-hall, this shows the readers the vivid difference between the happiness of the mead-hall to the depression and loneliness of the cold winter landscape.

To begin, in the poem "The Seafarer", translated by Burton Raffel, is an explanation of the theme "isolation". A very common literary tool is also used in this poem, imagery. The seafarer starts off by telling his hardships at sea. When he would have to watch the ship, he would be so cold and wet from the wild waves. He believes that no one understands the isolation and loneliness he feels. The speaker begins to compare the sea with God, and describes how everyone must be good to God and not deal with the Devil. In this poem, the phrase "the sea took me, swept me back and forth in sorrow and fear and pain, showed me suffering in a hundred ships." would help portray the theme of isolation, and uses imagery to paint a picture in your head. Without imagery, the story would have been very hard to understand, and you wouldn't have been able to put yourself in the speakers shoes.

These themes are portrayed through the literary device of kennings. This poem is about a man who has been exiled and is force to be alone and depend on himself. He describes how it feels to be lonely and depressed as he is wandering the lands, giving this piece a gloomy and sorrowful mood. For example the text says, "Oft when the day broke, oft at the dawning, Lonely and wretched I wailed my woe. No man is living, no comrade left, To whom I dare fully unlock my heart." This shoes how the mood is gloomy and sorrowful because he uses words like lonely and wretched. The man has lost his lord, who used to help support him by providing him with gold, which can be displayed in the kenning. After his lost, he is left with no means to support himself and feels adrift.

Despite the fact that he exiled her. She was by herself on her journey. In the poem, the author describes imagery. She uses the following excerpt, "The valleys are dark the hills high the yard overgrown bitter with briers a joyless dwelling." The woman cried every day, she was very sad and lonely by herself in other words, she was a complete emotional wreck. So finally, she decided it was time to go out and find the kinsmen that had exiled her. In the poem, the author describes imagery by using this statement, “while I graved each dawn, wondered where my lord, my first on earth might be”. In this poem the speaker seems to be a man who has been be separated from his lord and is very lonely. Loneliness is shown in the story when the man talks about how upset he is that he is no longer with his lord. The excerpt “ Homeless and hapless, since days of old, When the dark earth covered my dear lord’s face, And I sailed away with sorrowful heart, over winy seas, seeking a gold-lord. If far or near lived one to befriend me.” explains how lonely he is and how he had a heavy heart since being separated from his lord. The translator uses words like “sorrowful heart” and “homeless and hapless” which makes the reader think of sadness and being alone.

In the story the man is all alone in the sea, “The whales’ home, wandering to the widest corners of the world”, this shows that he travels to so many places in this world, but in “the whales’ home”, the sea, there is no one to be found. In the poem, the author describes a man alone at sea. He uses the excerpt “ And forth in sorrow and fear and pain, showed me suffering in a hundred ships. My soul roams with the sea, to the open ocean, breaking oaths on the curve of a wave.” tells us a man in such a wide ocean with so many things happening around him he is still always all alone. This excerpt contains the tool, alliteration. This tool supports the theme of loneliness “now there are no rulers, no emperors, nor giver of God”
